(WFI) Tokyo Sexwale leads a FIFA delegation to Israel and Palestine on Thursday under fresh efforts to resolve disputes between the Israeli and Palestinian football federations.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is expected to make a trip to the region in the coming months.
Sexwale, chairman of the FIFA Monitoring Committee for Israel-Palestine, will hold meetings with the Israeli political authorities, including sports minister Miri Regev and officials from the Israel and Palestinian FAs. The presidents of the Israel Football Association and Palestinian Football Association, Ofer Eini and Jibril Rajoub, are members of the FIFA committee.
The FIFA delegation will visit Tel Aviv, Ramallah and Gaza on the two-day visit.
Talks have already been held with Palestinian authorities as FIFA attempts to broker a peace deal with Israel over restrictions on the movement of Palestinian players and their participation in Israeli leagues and competitions.
Sexwale’s committee, set up in May 2015, was asked to continue its work at the 66th FIFA Congress in Mexico last month.
FIFA officials will also hold talks with representatives of COGAT (Coordination of Government Authorities in the Territories), the body responsible for implementing the Israeli government's policy in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, Sexwale’s delegation is scheduled to visit the Palestinian Football Association headquarters in Gaza and inspect facilities in the area.
A press conference will follow the visit to Gaza.
