The New England Revolution came from behind twice and ultimately pulled off a 3-2 road win on Wednesday night to advance to the US Open Cup quarterfinals after ousting NASL side New York Cosmos on the campus of St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y.
After an opportunity from Diego Fagundez whizzed over the bar in the 23rd minute, the Cosmos opened the scoring in the 38th minute via former New York Red Bulls midfielder Ruben Bover, who deposited a neat layoff from a teammate inside the box.
But the Revs would equalize before the break with Teal Bunbury leveling matters in the 42nd minute on a blast that found the near right corner.
Bunbury nearly put the Revs ahead 10 minutes after the break, but his long-range shot was stopped by Cosmos ’keeper Jimmy Maurer, allowing Sebastian Guenzatti to give the Cosmos another lead, 2-1, just seconds later in the 56th minute.
Down a goal, Revs manager Jay Heaps brought in superstars Kei Kamara and Lee Nguyen off the bench and they helped lead the charge with two late goals in a span of eight minutes to overturn the result.
First, in the 75th minute, it was a quick turnover that let Kamara in alone into the box for the equalizer. And with seven minutes remaining, Kamara turned provider for Bunbury, who netted his second goal to put the Revs up to stay, 3-2.
With their win, the Revs will now host Eastern Conference foes Philadelphia Union in the USOC quarterfinals on July 19 or 20.
