Michy Batshuayi has undergone his medical ahead of a proposed move to Chelsea, Belgium head coach Marc Wilmotshas confirmed.
The Marseille striker was yesterday the subject of a £33.1million bid from the Blues and is expected to sign a five-year contract worth around £70,000-a-week after Belgium’s participation in Euro 2016 is at an end.
At the request of his current club Batshuayi was blocked from speaking to the media as he had been scheduled to ahead of his country’s quarter-final clash with Wales but Wilmots said that he had agreed to allow the 22-year-old to leave his squad and conduct tests at a nearby hospital in Bordeaux.
“I think it is best that players are busy with transfers,” Wilmots said. “This shows that they have worked hard. They had a free afternoon yesterday and some took the opportunity to move forward with transfer issues. It’s good to solve these problems.
“He did not ask me for advice [over the move]. Marseille just asked me to release him for two hours for a medical visit from 10 am to noon. That’s all.”
Tottenham, West Ham and Crystal Palace all held strong interest in Batshuayi, the latter agreeing a £31.8m fee with Marseille earlier this week, though they seemed unlikely to be favoured by the in-demand striker.
Batshuayi scored 33 goals in 78 games for Marseille and caught Chelsea’s attention as the asking price for previous targets Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku moved beyond £50m.
