Player ratings: Slovakia 0-0 England – Who was YOUR man of the match as England come second in Group B?
irishmirror.ie
It was a frustrating night for Roy Hodgson's side who failed to break down a stubborn Slovakia defence at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard
On a night when England enjoyed plenty of possession but couldn't find a goal, the Three Lions were forced to settle for second place in Group B.
England's best chance fell to Jamie Vardy, but Matus Kozacik in goal for Slovakiasaved well to keep it level.
And while they had the lion's share of the ball, they could not penetrate a stubborn Slovak defence.
So it finished goalless on the night, which means England play either Hungary, Iceland, Portugal or Austria on Monday night.
Ed Malyon was at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard for us - here are his player ratings:
England
Joe Hart 6
Rarely tested until forced into a smart save from Weiss on 55 minutes (below). Very vocal as always and still confident despite error against Wales.
Nathaniel Clyne 7
When he got forward England looked more dangerous in attack, and he should have been given more liberty to do so as Slovakia retreated and retreated. Shackled Weiss with ease.
Gary Cahill 7
Quiet night for the Chelsea man but he must learn to keep his hands off opposition players.
Chris Smalling 5
Huge gaffe that went unpunished on an otherwise quiet night. Can thank Joe Hart for saving his bacon.
Ryan Bertrand BOOKED 7
Did well going forward, but didn’t get beyond Lallana enough in first half. Rightly cautioned after several fouls.
Eric Dier 7
Mopped up well and played one exquisite long ball in another fairly complete display. Could arguably have been switched to a ball-playing centre-half role as England got more desperate.
Jordan Henderson 6
Set up England’s best first-half chance with an exquisite through ball and did well to keep tabs on Marek Hamsik. Little else to write home about though and didn't push for a starting spot.
Jack Wilshere 5 (Rooney, 56)
Looked rusty and didn’t provide enough penetration. First player subbed. Failed to make a case for his inclusion in the next round.
Adam Lallana 6 (Alli, 60)
Had a stunning effort saved, but isn’t a natural wideman in a 4-3-3.
Nice touches and some clever play but nothing has come off for him yet.
Jamie Vardy 6
Saw a one-on-one excellently blocked by Kozacik but pressed very well.
A quieter second half and arguably should have been replaced rather than Sturridge, with a tight game more likely to suit the Liverpool striker.
Daniel Sturridge 6 (Kane, 76)
Floated around and got on the ball but created little. Not a winger.
