• Torino earn first success in five outings in Spain

Torino FC recorded their first victory in five outings in Spain and became the first Italian side to win at San Mamés as they booked their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 16.
The visitors secured progress with a 3-2 triumph in a pulsating encounter to complete a 5-4 aggregate victory over the Liga side in Bilbao.
The second leg began in cagey fashion with the round of 32 tie delicately poised at the halfway stage following the 2-2 draw in Turin. Athletic – renowned for their threat from set pieces – went close to taking the lead via a free-kick. However, Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli produced an excellent stop to deny Beñat.
The visitors themselves soon took the lead after being awarded a penalty. Fabio Quagliarella, recalled to the side after he was surprisingly left out of the first leg, rewarded Granata coach Giampiero Ventura immediately in the return – converting from the spot after 16 minutes.
The hosts responded with a fine equaliser after 44 minutes. Beñat's clipped ball over the Torino back four found Andoni Iraola at the back post and the defender finished in style to give his side the advantage once again. Yet the Serie A side would not be denied. Maxi López, who struck twice in Italy last week, found a way past Iago Herrerín once again, this time with a powerful header in added time.
The Italian team almost extended their advantage after the restart. Maxi López saw his effort blocked inside the area before Herrerín denied the 30-year-old after the forward pounced on the rebound. Three minutes later, Iñaki Williams, who scored on his European debut in the first meeting, nodded a brilliant Mikel Rico cross onto the far post with Padelli beaten.
But, the home side would not be denied much longer in front of their passionate home fans as Óscar de Marcos's cool finish on 61 minutes ensured a repeat of last Thursday's 2-2 scoreline. The Granata, however, did not lose their nerve and responded with a fine finish of their own seven minutes later as Matteo Darmian converted Omar El Kaddouri cross.
Substitute Josef Martínez missed a glorious opportunity to seal Torino's progress – hitting the side netting after beating Herrerín. Even so, Los Leones were unable to find the two goals they needed to keep their European hopes alive.
