Uganda were held to a goalless stalemate by Burkina Faso in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Tuesday night.
The draw leaves Burkina Faso and Uganda placed first and second respectively on Group D standings - both on seven points. The former are sitting on top on head-to-head advantage.
The home side were denied an early goal by the crossbar just 11 minutes into the game when Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje's effort hit the woodwork with Daouda Diakite beaten in Burkina Faso goal.
The Cranes showed signs of urgency each time they were in possession of the ball. Joseph Ochaya had a go from distance in the 21st minute and his effort went wide of the target.
Even though, Uganda had all the possession, Burkina Faso were happy to sit back and launch quick counter attacks against the hosts.
In the 36th minute, the Cranes were awarded a free-kick after Emmanuel Okwi was fouled outside the Stallions box. Ochaya's attempt from the resultant set-piece was well saved by Diakite.
William Luwagga Kizito played a good cross into the Burkina Faso box four minutes before the half-time break, and Geoffrey Massa headed the ball over the crossbar.
Just five minutes after the restart, Mawejje also put in a curling cross into the Stallions box in search of Uganda captain Massa, but this time the striker failed to connect with the ball.
The Cranes continued their dominance in the second-half. However, they were finding it difficult to beat Diakite in the Stallions goal.
The Burkinabe shot-stopper came off his goal-line on the hour-mark to deny Uganda's hard-working forward Okwi a shot at goal following a good pass from Farouk Miya.
The home side should have broken the deadlock in the 69th minute when Kizito set up Miya who fired over the crossbar after Ochaya had played brilliant pass to the former.
The Stallions were nearly given a goal ten minutes later after Uganda keeper Denis Onyango committed a mistake, but the visitors' talisman Jonathan Pitroipa fired over the crossbar.
In the 82nd minute, Burkina Faso head coach Paulo Duarte introduced striker Aristide Bance for forward Abdoul Traore as the visitors looked to snatch a late winner.
Cranes captain Massa was just unfortunate to see his header come off the upright eight minutes later as the home side applied some pressure onto the Stallions defence.
Nevertheless, Burkina Faso defender Charles Kabore was red-carded in stoppage time as the visitors stood firm at the back and the match ended in a goalless draw.
