USL Preview: Wilmington Hammerheads FC vs. New York Red Bulls II

Two of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference meet Friday night


WILMINGTON, N.C. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC and the New York Red Bulls II meet on Friday night in a clash that brings together two of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference. Kickoff at Legion Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

  • Current record: 2-1-1, 7 points
  • The Hammerheads continued their strong start to the season last Sunday with a 2-0 victory against FC Montreal at Legion Stadium.
  • Qudus Lawal and Matthew Barnes-Homer both scored their first goals of the season in the win, with the goal also being Barnes-Homer’s first as a Hammerhead.
  • With a win against the Red Bulls II, the Hammerheads would equal their win total from the 2015 USL season.
  • Wilmington’s Mael Corboz was signed by the New York Red Bulls this offseason, but joined the Hammerheads after being waived on February 29 before the MLS season kicked off.

  • The Red Bulls II are coming off a 0-0 draw with the Rochester Rhinos last Sunday at Red Bull Arena.
  • Brandon Allen leads the team with three goals, but has been held scoreless in his last two outings.
  • The Red Bulls II are one of only five teams who remain undefeated in the USL, alongside Toronto FC II in the Eastern Conference.
  • Goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was named to the USL Team of the Week on Tuesday as he recorded five saves against Rochester after coming on in the 12th minute for an injured Ryan Meara.
