Arsenal 2-0 Bayern Munich: Giroud & Ozil end Guardiola’s winning run

The Gunners pair was on hand to end Pep Guardiola's sides 100 per cent record in the domestic and European football this season, winning a vital three points
Goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil gave Arsenal an important 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in Tuesday's Champions League game, handing Bayern their first defeat of the season.

Giroud, who netted the winner for Arsene Wenger's side, came off the bench in the second half to score in strange circumstances as Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer flapped at a free-kick, and the Frenchman headed onto his arm and into the net after 77 minutes.

Mesut Ozil then dobuled the Gunners lead in added time tapping in from close range, with the referee deeming the ball over the line despite Neuer managing to hurl the ball out of goal.

Both sides had chances throughout as Theo Walcott missed saw a first-half header remarkably saved by Neuer, while Petr Cech was on hand for Arsenal to keep Robert Lewandowski at bay in the second-half.

Incredible stat from Arsenal 2-0 Bayern Munich proves that possession means nothing

The Gunners normally have the lion's share of possession but not on Tuesday night

Most games Arsenal find themselves having more possession than the opposition.
In fact their whole game is built around owning the ball and then carving out opportunities.
But against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night they did the exact opposite.
They won 2-0 despite having hardly any possession at all.
In fact, they managed just 30%, meanwhile Bayern managed more than 600 passes but still didn't win.

Arsenal edge Bayern to keep Champions League hopes alive

Goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil were enough for the Gunners to defeat Pep Guardiola and Co.

Arsenal revived their European dreams tonight with a stunning 2-0 win overBayern Munich at the Emirates to put them right back into the UEFA Champions League mix. Seemingly adrft after losing their first two games -- and to minnows -- Arsenal gutted out a massive win behind goals fromOlivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil on Tuesday night against what is the consensus best team in Europe at this time.
This was effectively a must-win game for Arsenal, who had to date failed to collect a single point in this year’s Champions League, and it must be said that after years of disappointment and underachievement, they finally came good in a big game. Riding high after solid wins over rivals Manchester United and a tricky league game at Watford, Arsenal played a pragmatic game, absorbing some ferocious pressure from the German champions, then springing on the counter to strike.
But it took some time, and to be sure, Bayern must have felt like they had at least a point in hand until the 77th minute. That was when Giroud scored a scrappy goal in the 77th minute off a Santi Cazorla free kick after Manuel Neuer made an uncharacteristic mistake. The keeper rushed out to collect the ball but totally missed, allowing Giroud to stumble into the ball and head it home. It was the first goal Bayern had conceded this European campaign and it was utterly against the run of play. A gassed Arsenal side had been run around for most of the game by this slick-passing Bayern team and it looked unlikely that the home side were to snatch a win.
Ozil then added the second on a clean breakway sparked by Hector Bellerinat midfield in stoppage. Seizing on a loose pass, he found Ozil at the near post, and his teammate blasted the ball in near post. Neuer got a glove to it and clawed it out but the fifth official on the endline correctly ruled the ball had crossed the line, and awarded the goal.
This result was not what anyone expected. In fact, Arsenal struggled to get the game to heel in much of the first half, with Bayern overwhelmingly controlling the flow and pace of the game. Thiago and Thomas Muller were particularly dangerous, combining in the 11th minute on a slick one-two that forced Petr Cech into a fine stop.
Part of Arsenal’s problem was that they could not get out of their own half of the field for a solid twenty minutes. Francis Coquelin was playing a bit too far in front of his center backs – understandably reluctant to range forward – but that left space for Douglas Costa and Robert Lewandowski to ghost into. And with Bellerin tormented by Costa on one flank and Nacho Monrealharried by Thomas Muller on the other, it felt as if Arsenal might be in for a long night.
Costa in fact nearly scored in the 18th minute with an audacious turn that left Bellerin screwed into the turf, but he would be denied near post by Cech. AndArturo Vidal, again exploiting the space behind Coquelin forced Cech into a brave parry in the 28th.
But then things suddenly shifted. Alexis Sanchez, who had been forced to ride back to shield Monreal, was able to spring forward and he began pulling the strings with Theo Walcott as the runner up top. Walcott would be gifted a chance in the 22nd  with a nice dinked ball over Philipp Lahm but he could not settle and control the ball. David Alaba was then forced to make a fine block when Walcott and Alexis ran the give and go in the 30th.
The key moment came in the 32nd, when Neuer made the save of the game, an audacious one-handed claw to deny Walcott a point-blank header. That signaled that Arsenal were capable of scoring – but also that the best goalkeeper on the planet was likely to be the x-factor here on Tuesday. Still, it was true that while Cech made more saves than Neuer in the first half, few of them were beyond routine – Neuer, on the other hand, had foiled the better chances.
The second half, however, showed the difference in class. Bayern had made Arsenal cover a ferocious amount of ground in the first half, and the exertion showed. Bayern continued to keep men pinned on the sideline to spread the field and force Arsenal to cover more space than they wished to. It had the effect of blunting Walcott’s searing runs down the middle as the Gunners seemed to run out of gas.
Lewandowski almost made Arsenal pay dearly in the 75th when he raced into the area and forced a fine diving save out of Cech. He almost made them pay again in stoppage on a carbon copy of a play, only to be foiled by Laurent Koscielny with a brave stop.
But inbetween, Arsenal had scored twice, and with Bayern’s travelling support uncharacteristically silenced, the Emrirates was aroar. Arsenal still have much to do in Group E, but tonight they grabbed a lifeline and showed a resilience that has not often been ascribed to them to boot.

Champions League: Arsenal defeat Bayern as Barcelona win, Chelsea draw

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to give Arsenal a much-needed 2-0 victoryover powerful Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Arsenal went into the match without a single point from their two games against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos, but they handed the German side their first setback since Aug. 1.
Manuel Neuer made a spectacular save on Theo Walcott's free header from six yards in the 34th minute.
But in the second half Arsenal produced a goal out of nothing as Giroud -- who had recently come on for Walcott -- bundled the ball over the line on 77 minutes after Neuer failed to deal with a Santi Cazorla free kick.
The Gunners found a second with the last kick of the game when Hector Bellerin set up Ozil, who managed to get the ball over the line despite the best efforts of Neuer.
In the other game in Group F, Brown Ideye scored the only goal for Olympiakosin the 79th minute as the Greek champions won 1-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb.
Chelsea's recent struggles continued and the pressure ramped up on Jose Mourinho as the Blues were held to a 0-0 draw at Dynamo Kiev.
Eden Hazard and Willian hit the woodwork in an improved display, but there was to be no breakthrough as Mourinho's men stayed third in Group G.
Porto lead Group G after managing a 2-0 win at home against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
Vincent Aboubakar and Yacine Brahimi scored three minutes apart in the first half to give Porto a two-point cushion over Dynamo Kiev and three clear of Chelsea.
With the injured Lionel Messi still sidelined, substitute Ivan Rakitic stepped up to guide Barcelona to a 2-0 win at BATE Borisov in Group E.
Rakitic, who came on for Sergi Roberto in the 18th minute, had Barcelona's best chance to score in the first half but his unmarked header from 12 yards sailed over the bar.
But the Croatian didn't miss his opportunity three minutes after half-time when he coolly fired home a 20-yard strike from the top of the box.
He found his second goal of the game in the 65th minute by receiving a Neymar pass in the box and chipping the goalkeeper.
Also in Group E, Roma and Bayer Leverkusen drew 4-4 in a wild game in which both teams saw two-goal leads slip.
Leverkusen's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty after Vasilis Tortosidis was whistled for handling Hakan Calhanoglu's cross. Hernandez scored his second 15 minutes later after playing a 1-2 with Calhanoglu. The Mexican's first shot was saved by Wojciech Szczesny but the follow-up doubled Leverkusen's advantage.
Roma got one back in the 30th minute when Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno could only half-clear a corner, and the ball eventually fell to Daniele De Rossi to score. The Italian side equalised eight minutes later when De Rossi redirected a freek kick by Pjanic, and the Bosnian curled in the winner with a long free kick early in the second half.
Gervinho then found Iago Falque in the box to widen Roma's lead in the 73rd minute, but Leverkusen were not finished as Kevin Kampl scored in the 84th minute and Admir Mehmedi completed the comeback two minutes later.
Zenit St Petersburg stayed perfect in Group H, defeating Lyon 3-1 for their third win from three games.
Artem Dzyuba provided Zenit a lead inside three minutes, but Alexandre Lacazette equalised for the French side shortly after the break.
But Hulk put the hosts back in front eight minutes later with a blast from 30 yards, and Danny added a third goal seven minutes from time.
Valenica used a Stefan Mitrovic own goal to squeeze out a 2-1 win at home against Belgian champions Gent.
Sofiane Feghouli and Thomas Foket exchanged first-half goals, but Valencia took the lead again in the 72nd minute when a lobbed cross hit off the top of the crossbar, and fell to Jose Luis Gaya, whose shot deflected off Mitrovic and into the net.

Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil scored late on as Arsenal beat Bayern Munich to record their first win in this season's Champions League.
Bayern dominated possession but had goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to thank for a brilliant save to deny Theo Walcott in the first half.
Petr Cech tipped over Robert Lewandowski's strike before Giroud headed Arsenal ahead from a free-kick.
Ozil scored from close range in stoppage time to seal the Group F win.
