The Scot admits selling Ravel Morrison was "very painful" and believes the midfielder was one of the most naturally talented players he had ever signed

Sir Alex Ferguson admits it was “very painful” to sell Ravel Morrison and admits the midfielder is “the saddest case” he had at Manchester United.

Morrison emerged as one of the brightest stars in United’s youth team but failed to make a Premier League appearance before he joined West Ham in 2012.

Morrison’s problems off the field played a key role in his Old Trafford exit but Ferguson believes the 22-year-old, who now plays for Lazio, was one of the most naturally talented players he had ever signed.
"Sadly, there are examples of players who have similar backgrounds to [Ryan] Giggs or Cristiano Ronaldo, who, despite enormous talent, just aren't emotionally or mentally strong enough to overcome the hurts of their childhood and their inner demons,” Ferguson wrote in his new book ‘Leading’.

"Ravel Morrison might be the saddest case. He possessed as much natural talent as any youngster we ever signed, but kept getting into trouble.

"It was very painful to sell him to West Ham in 2012 because he could have been a fantastic player. But, over a period of years, the problems off the pitch continued to escalate and we had little option but to cut the cord."

REVEALED: The golden boot that Wayne Rooney will be presented with at Wembley in recognition of his England goal record

  • England captain is set for award before missing qualifier against Estonia
  • Sir Bobby Charlton, whose record Rooney broke, will make presentation

  • Wayne Rooney will miss England's Friday-night clash with Estonia at Wembley, but that will not ruin what is set to be a special occasion for the nation's new all-time record goalscorer.
England captain Rooney will be presented with a golden boot on the famous turf ahead of Friday's European Championship qualifier by England's second-highest scorer, Sir Bobby Charlton.
The image below gives a first glimpse at the 24-carat gold-plated commemorative prize that the 29-year-old will parade in front of an expected 75,000-strong crowd at the national stadium.

The Football Association commissioned silversmiths Thomas Lyte, who also work on the Emirates FA Cup, to produce the boot that marks Rooney's 50th England goal.
The Manchester United striker found the net from the penalty spot in last month's 2-0 win over Switzerland to put himself top of the goalscoring charts.
The text on the ceremonial boot's base reads: 'This boot was presented by Sir Bobby Charlton at Wembley Stadium on 9 October 2015 to mark Wayne Rooney becoming England's all-time leading goal-scorer.

'Congratulations Wayne from The Football Association and thank you for everything you have done for the team and country.'
Rooney was handed a special shirt with 'Rooney 50' on the back marking his achievement following the Switzerland win by manager Roy Hodgson but that was deemed insufficient to mark his half-century of goals.
In a post-match dressing room speech on the night Rooney told his team-mates: 'I'd like to thank every one of you, coaches, players, staff who I've worked with for such a long time.

'This is such a huge moment for myself and my family and my career. Hopefully for the team, for myself, there's a lot more to come — we can be successful.'
He added: 'Hopefully there's a lot of young lads coming through, Harry (Kane), Ross (Barkley), Raheem (Sterling), who can come close and even pass me in the future. I'm grateful, it means the world to me, and thank you very much.'
A special flag will also be on show at Wembley on Friday night to mark the breaking of Charlton's 45-year record.
Rooney will also miss Monday's game against Lithuania with the ankle injury that has prevented him from training this week, although it is not expected to keep him out of Manchester United's next game against his former club Everton on October 17.

Schweinsteiger suffers thigh injury on Germany duty

The 31-year-old suffered a thigh problem during his final training session before Thursday's Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland

Manchester United have been dealt another injury blow as Bastian Schweinsteiger has been ruled out of Germany’s final Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia on Sunday with a thigh problem.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury in Germany’s final training session before Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to Republic of Ireland.

"Schweinsteiger probably won't play on sunday," said Germany boss Joachim Low after the loss in Dublin.

"The medical staff said he has to take a break for two or three days. He will stay with us and we will see, what is possible. But it does not look like he can play. [Mario] Gotze certainly won't play."

Wayne Rooney will also miss England’s final two Euro 2016 qualification games due to an ankle injury and will not travel with Roy Hodgson’s squad to face Lithuania on Monday.

Marcos Rojo also withdrew from the Argentina national side ahead of their games against Ecuador on Thursday and Paraguay next Tuesday. The defender has missed United’s last four matches with a hamstring injury but is looking to recover in time for the match against Everton on October 17.
