Tianjin: Ricardo Goulart gave Gamba Osaka a timely remainder of his goalscoring prowess ahead of Wednesday’s AFC Champions League 2015 semi-final second leg with the Brazilian scoring both goals as Guangzhou Evergrande defeated Tianjin Teda 2-0 in their last domestic fixture before the 2013 ACL champions resume their quest for another continental title next week.
Goulart (pictured in ACL first-leg action) opened the scoring in Saturday’s Chinese Super League (CSL) Round 28 at the Tianjin Olympic Centre Stadium with a 61st minute penalty before compatriot Elkeson set up the 2015 ACL’s leading scorer for the second with the nine minutes left to play.
The victory was the reigning Chinese champions’ 18th of the current CSL season keeping them top of the standings with 63 points, four clear of second-place Shanghai SIPG, who lost ground on the leaders after being held to a 2-2 draw at home by Shijiazhuang Yongchang.
Guangzhou’s focus turns back to continental competition with Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side set to renew acquaintances with last season’s Japanese treble winners Gamba Osaka at the Expo ’70 Stadium, where the Chinese powerhouse will be looking to build on their 2-1 first-leg lead and book their place in next month’s AFC Champions League 2015 final.
