Mumbai City FC FC 5-1 NorthEast United: Chhetri hat-trick takes Anelka's side secon
Sunil Chhetri starred for the Ranbir Kapoor co-owned team as his hat-trick took them second on the Indian Super League table...
Mumbai City FC thumped NorthEast United FC 5-1 in a round six Indian Super League (ISL) encounter at the DY Patil Stadium on Wednesday. A hat-trick from Sunil Chhetri (25', 40', 48') lead the way for the hosts. Sony Norde (51') and Franz Bertin (86') also scored for the home team while Boithang Haokip (29') scored the visitors' only goal.
Nicolas Anelka made two changes to his team as Gabriel Fernandes and Juan Aguilera were replaced by Subash Singh and Frantz Bertin with the latter starting in midfield. Meanwhile, Selim Benachour missed the fixture entirely due to the recent passing of his father. The home team donned black armbands to mark their teammate's loss.
On the other hand, Cesar Farias went with a quartet of changes to his side as Robin Gurung, Diomansy Kamara, Francis Dadzie and Bruno Herrero made way for Silas, marquee player Simao Sabrosa, Nicolas Velez and Boithang Haokip.
The game began tentatively with the two in-form sides poking and prodding at each other. The first real opportunity fell to the away side in the 11th minute when Boithang's cross from the right found Velez at the far post but the striker was unable to direct his effort on target.
The hosts broke forward on the counter-attack in the 24th minute as Sunil Chhetri played in Subash whose cross struck Carlos Lopez on the arm inside the area, leading to the referee awarding Mumbai a penalty. Chhetri stepped up and dispatched a cheeky Panenka to give his side the lead.
However, NorthEast dragged themselves level just four minutes later. A Boithang free-kick from the right was poorly defended as his effort went through the wall and crept inside the near post with Subrata off his line.
Three minutes later, Piquionne wasted an opportunity to give Mumbai the lead again as his header from Norde's corner went over the crossbar.
Another corner-kick from the Haitian in the 38th minute nearly went straight in but for Rehenesh's intervention. The ball fell for Pavel Cmovs but his header from six yards out crashed against the bar.
However, it was the Indian skipper who gave Mumbai the lead again in the 40th minute. Norde's cross was sent back across goal by Subash's header at the far post. Chhetri was on hand to tap it into the empty net with a typical poacher's finish to send Mumbai into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The second period got off to the worst possible start for the away team. Just two minutes into the restart, Norde's corner kick saw Chhetri attempt an overhead kick but the ball fell to Andre Bikey who inadvertently handled the ball inside the area to concede another penalty. Chhetri buried the spot-kick to the keeper's right to complete his hat-trick, the third in the ISL and the first by an Indian player.
It got even worse for NorthEast in the 51st minute. Juan Aguilera played the ball through for Norde who was played onside by Cedric Hengbart. The forward sent Rehenesh to the deck with a clever dummy before calmly slotting his finish into the far corner to make it 4-1 to the hosts.
Chhetri had already caught up to the league's top score Stiven Mendoza (6 goals each) when he was sent clean through courtesy of a Piquionne pass in the 56th minute. However, the striker was denied his fourth of the game by the crossbar.
Mumbai then shifted into cruise control with the visitors unable to fashion any openings of note. The home team could have done better with their attacks on the break but came close to a fifth in the 78th minute. Norde's cross from the left flank saw Chhetri dart in front of the defender but his header went over the bar.
The visitors had a rare opportunity in the 85th minute when Hanghal's ball forward was flicked by Dadzie for substitute Sanju Pradhan. The winger ran at Cmovs with pace before having his shot beaten away by Subrata.
Aguilera then played in Chhetri in the following minute. With only Rehenesh to beat, the striker's shot was blocked by the custodian and trickled wide for a corner. The subsequent delivery from Norde however saw Franz Bertin head in Mumbai's fifth with incredible ease against a statuesque NorthEast defence.
Deep into stoppage time, Bruno's ball across the face of the goal was nearly met by Velez but Subrata was brave and got there first, picking up a knock in the process but ultimately securing his side's 5-1 win at the full-time whistle.
First managerial sacking of the Indian Super League: Kerala Blasters coach Taylor leaves club
Kerala Blasters coach Peter Taylor has left the club by 'mutual decision' in what is the first managerial sacking in theIndian Super League's young history.
"Kerala Blasters announced that Peter Taylor has left the club with immediate effect following a mutual decision. Kerala Blasters thanks Peter for his efforts and contribution during the association. Trevor Morgan will presently assume the responsibilities of Kerala Blasters team," the club said in a press release.
Last year's finalists lost their fourth match in a row when they went down 3-2 against FC Pune City at The Balewadi on Tuesday evening, leaving the team bottom of the table after six league games.
Following the loss, Taylor had admitted that his team had 'given themselves a mountain to climb' and that only a 'fantastic run of wins' could save them.
Taylor has previously managed Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Hull City and even took charge of the England senior team for a match, but it seems that Kerala's management ran out of patience with the 62-year-old. The Blasters still have eight league games left to play before the semifinalists are decided.
The Kochi-based team had won their first fixture 3-1 against NorthEast United and drew their second game against Mumbai City. Taylor had said that he would have taken four points from the first two games in any league, but since then, things have gone downhill.
Morgan has led East Bengal to a Federation Cup and Kolkata Premier League championship.
Kerala Blasters is owned by Sachin Tendulkar (60 percent), PVP Ventures (20 percent) and Muthoot Pappachan Group (20 percent).
