MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES
Steve Wilson: "How to summarise the importance of this game to both teams? 'Crucial' barely seems to scratch the surface.
"Sam Allardyce, the only man ever to manage both clubs, is eager not to be the first Sunderland manager to lose to Newcastle since Steve Bruce.
"Steve McClaren is so pre-occupied that he wrote an open letter to the Newcastle faithful calling their run of derby defeats 'unbearable'.
"The truth may be that both clubs have been hamstrung in recent years by their clinical obsession with each other.
"There are worse things than losing a derby - even one as supercharged as this - and few will remember who wins this game if both proud clubs are relegated in May."
WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY
Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce: "It's quite bizarre to say that Sunderland have won five on the trot, and telling me the last three managers' second game was against Newcastle and they had all lost the first one and won the second one.
"I'm just hoping that it continues to follow on this Sunday. It's got very little to do with me, it's down to fate the fact that this run carries on."
Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren: "The derby is massive for the fans. There's a determination to win it for them but it's important we go into every game with the same amount of determination.
"We have to make sure we play the game and not the occasion.
"We don't pay attention to the table or previous results - what we do have is a fresh game and a great opportunity to come away with three points."
LAWRO'S PREDICTION
This is the fixture that Sunderland keep winning - I think it will be a different outcome this time, though.
Sam Allardyce will be looking to keep things tight and I think Newcastle will tighten up too - they really have to.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head- Sunderland have won the last five Tyne-Wear derbies, all in the league. Neither they nor Newcastle have ever won six derbies in a row.
- Newcastle's only goal in eight hours and 57 minutes against Sunderland was scored by Mathieu Debuchy in a 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light two years ago.
- A ninth Premier League win over Newcastle would represent Sunderland's best record in the competition against any club.
Sunderland- Sunderland are winless in their last 12 league games (D5, L7). It's their worst run since a 14-match streak without a victory between November 2009 and March 2010.
- They have only won four of their 28 league games in 2015.
- This is only the third time in Sunderland's top-flight history that they have gone nine games without a win from the start of the season. They also failed to win their 10th game on the two other occasions, in 1969-70 and 1976-77.
- The Black Cats have yet to keep a clean sheet in their 11 league and cup matches this season.
- Sam Allardyce has never lost his opening Premier League home game in charge of a club (W3, D1). He is the fourth consecutive Sunderland boss to face Newcastle in his second game in charge. Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet and Dick Advocaat all lost their opening match before winning in the derby.
- Allardyce was Newcastle's manager for 21 Premier League games between August 2007 and January 2008 (W7, D5, L9), which included a 1-1 home draw with Sunderland.
Newcastle United- They won for only the second time in 20 Premier League games last Sunday against Norwich (D4, L14).
- This is the first derby game that Newcastle will approach on the back of a victory since April 2006.
- Newcastle have allowed 55 shots on target against them, the most of any Premier League club after this season's opening nine games.
- Steve McClaren takes charge of his 200th Premier League game on Sunday. He has won 65 games and lost 81 to average 1.25 points per game.
