Simeone: Atletico won't settle for draw

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid are targeting victory against Galatasaray, despite only needing a draw to progress to the last 16.
Atletico Madrid only require a point to advance to the Champions League round of 16, but coach Diego Simeone denied his team would be content with a draw against Galatasaray.
Simeone and Co. welcome Galatasaray to the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday, needing a point to ensure their progress from Group C.
Atletico, though, have no intention of sharing the spoils with their Turkish visitors in Madrid.
"The best thing is to win and that's what we're looking for," Simeone told reporters.
"Before any game we always look to win. Sometimes other situations materialise but we aim to win."
Atletico - two points behind group leaders Benfica heading into matchday five - face a Galatasaray outfit led by caretaker coach Claudio Taffarel.
Hamza Hamzaoglu was sacked last week, with the former Brazil international put in charge and overseeing Saturdays' 3-3 draw against Antalyaspor.
Simeone said of third-placed Galatasaray: "We'll focus on their players who all have great experience. In the past two games they have scored six goals, so they are a force to be reckoned with in front of goal.
"It's true that they have conceded heavily too. They are a side who never roll over and will fight for the possibility they still have to progress in the competition."

Atletico Madrid v Galatasaray UEFA Champions League Team News, Preview and Tips - Atletico set to secure last-16 spot

  • Atletico Madrid host Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday
  • Spanish side should secure knockout spot
Atletico Madrid should find themselves through to the last 16 of the Champions League by the end of Wednesday night’s action – but could be made to work hard by Galatasaray.

The Spanish club, who were within seconds of an incredible La Liga/Champions League double in May 2014, are in great shape to qualify for the knockout stage again and they have their destiny very much in their own hands with Group C’s third-placed team Galatasaray arriving at the Vicente Calderon Stadium this week.

Victory would get the job done for Diego Simeone’s side but finishing top of the table, and thus securing a theoretically easier last-16 tie, will be more difficult considering they currently trail by two points to Benfica whose next opponents are bottom club Astana.

The problem for Atletico is that they lost 2-1 at home to Benfica and still have to travel to Lisbon on match-day six.

Simeone can take encouragement that his side were held 0-0 in Kazakhstan and the same fate, or potentially worse, could await Benfica this week, but ultimately it’s looking distinctly possible that Atletico could find themselves up against, say, a Bayern Munich or Manchester City when the competition resumes in February.

But one step at a time and the immediate job is to get the better of Galatasaray, as Atletico did 2-0 away from home in September thanks to an Antoine Griezmann double. At the time, Galatasaray were making a sluggish start to the campaign domestically and then started showing much improved form – although it should also be said they are now on a run of three games without a win.

What they are doing, however, is scoring plenty of goals – just conceding more than ideal as well – and former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski in particular is in terrific form with eight goals for the season including three in his last three games.

Atletico are up to second in La Liga after their city rivals Real Madrid’s El Clasico drubbing and simply doing what they normally do – keeping things tight and winning narrowly.

This could be another example because we think Galatasaray will fare better than the two-goal margin by which they were beaten in Istanbul without quite being able to keep their own qualification hopes alive.
