legend  asserted his innocence of charges of funding the Muslim Brotherhood, while explaining that his admiration for Kuwait was the reason behind his refusal to get paid for his participation in the Kuwait Champions Challenge.
Former Al Ahly player spoke to the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Jarida during his visit to Kuwait to attend the opening ceremony of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.
“Despite freezing some of my financial assets, I am not pleaded guilty and I am very sure of my innocence. I also have complete faith in the Egyptian judiciary,” the former Egyptian international said.
The Egyptian authorities confiscated some of the financial assets of the retired star for being a partner in As-hab Tours tourism company, which allegedly funded the Muslim Brotherhood.
Abou-Treika however denied any relation with the Muslim Brotherhood saying that he never met any of its leaders before. He added that former director of the tourism company, Anas El-Kady, who was recently accused of financing Muslim Brotherhood operation, has not been part of the company since 2013.
Amid criticism for the former player over alleged Muslim Brotherhood ties, Abou-Treika’s refusal to receive money in return for his participation in the stadium’s opening ceremony in Kuwait drew praise from social media users. The ceremony organising committee reportedly offered each of the participating players 50,000 Euros.
“It is a great honor to meet the Emir of Kuwait and I respect him a lot, that’s why I refused to take any money in return. I was so proud with the reception I received from the fans here. It is enough for me,” Abou-Treika explained.
The retired footballer took part in the Football Champions Tour team against a Kuwaiti all-star team Friday in the opening ceremony of Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait. The Egyptian star was subbed during the second half with a huge ovation by the fans and his teammates.
