WASS HELPS EVIAN THROUGH BUT LORIENT, NICE OUT

Daniel Wass scored as Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC advanced to the Coupe de France last 32 on Saturday, but FC Lorient and OGC Nice were both sent packing by lower-league opposition and LOSC Lille were knocked out at Bastia.

Coupe de France round of 64

SC Bastia 2 - 0 LOSC Lille

SC Bastia got the better of LOSC Lille in the only encounter of two Ligue 1 clubs on Saturday thanks to a first-half brace by Floyd Ayité. The Corsicans, who finished 2014 unbeaten in three matches in all competitions, started the New Year with a bang, taking the lead inside five minutes at the Stade Armand-Cesari. The goal was a nightmare for Steeve Elana, making a rare start in goal for Lille, who kicked a David Rozehnal back-pass straight against Ayité and could only watch as the ball rebounded into the net.

Ghislain Printant’s home side then doubled their lead just past the midway point in the first half when Ryad Boudebouz released Ayité, who broke in behind the Lille defence before finishing high into the net past the advancing Elana. And a Lille side who have struggled desperately for goals this season were unable to find a route back into the tie after that as Bastia boosted morale ahead of next week's league meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

Avranches 1 - 0 FC Lorient

FC Lorient fell at the first hurdle to lower-league opposition for the second season running. A year after a humiliating defeat in the round of 64 at the hands of tiny AS Yzeure, Les Merlus were sent packing by third-tier club Avranches in Normandy.

The only goal of the game at the Stade René Fenouillère was scored by Maguette Diongue in the 54th minute, and Lorient, without a host of first-team regulars due to injury and international duty, were unable to find a route back into the game. Avranches even managed to hold on and produce the shock of the day despite having defender Ali Keïta sent off six minutes from time.

Valenciennes FC 2 - 0 OGC Nice

Enduring a difficult season in the league, Nice were hoping the Coupe de France could provide them with some cheer in 2015. However, the Côte d'Azur club, who last won the Cup in 1997, were sent packing at the first hurdle by a Valenciennes side sitting in mid-table in Ligue 2.

The home side opened the scoring from the game's first corner with just 11 minutes on the clock at the Stade du Hainaut, Adama Coulibaly rising at the near post to head home. And Nice, who announced an agreement to sign French international winger Hatem Ben Arfa on the morning of the game, never recovered from the loss of a second goal a minute before half-time.

Valenciennes broke forward quickly and, after Opa Nguette failed to get his shot away, the ball fell for Dutch striker Rydell Poepon, who fired into the net off the far post to seal the northern club's progress to the last 32 for the first time since 2012.

FC Nantes 4 - 0 Club Franciscain

FC Nantes ruthlessly ended the dreams of tiny sixth-tier side Club Franciscain, who had made the long trip from the French Caribbean island of Martinique and were hoping to become the first side from the Antilles to reach the last 32.

The Ligue 1 side, who last won the Cup in 2000, opened the scoring 14 minutes in when Lucas Deaux found the net with a terrific curling shot from the edge of the box, and Florian Narcissot headed into his own net just after the half-hour mark to make it 2-0. The visitors were then left with a damage limitation job after Jorick Ephestion was sent off early in the second half for a dangerous tackle on Issa Cissokho.

Johan Audel, who has roots in Martinique, hit the woodwork for Nantes before the third goal arrived 13 minutes from time, 20-year-old Valentin Rongier's shot from just outside the box going in off the goalkeeper and a post. And Venezuelan defender Oswaldo Vizcarrondo headed in a Jordan Veretout corner to wrap up the win in injury time at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

Bobigny AC 0 - 3 Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC

Knocked out at the first hurdle last season, the 2013 runners-up Evian-Thonon-Gaillard avoided an upset in their clash with sixth-tier Bobigny in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. In a game played practically in the shadow of the Stade de France, which will host the final, Evian toiled for long spells before substitute Fabien Camus opened the scoring with a neat finish midway through the second half.

Danish striker Nicki Bille Nielsen then made it 2-0 and Evian added a third goal in stoppage time, with another Dane, Daniel Wass, netting from inside the area.

Lusitanos Saint-Maur US 1 - 3 Stade de Reims

Like Evian, Reims avoided a nasty surprise away to sixth-tier opponents in the Paris suburbs. Against Lusitanos Saint-Maur in Créteil, the Ligue 1 side opened the scoring seven minutes before half-time courtesy of Brazilian winger Diego Rigonato.

Saint-Maur, who caused a stir by eliminating Ligue 2 neighbours US Créteil earlier in the competition, drew level shortly after half-time when Sitou Ayi converted at the back post at the end of a breakaway. However, Reims coach Jean-Luc Vasseur, who was previously in charge of Créteil, would have been relieved when Gaëtan Charbonnier quickly restored the visitors’ lead. A Nicolas de Préville overhead kick then made sure of the win for Reims, who last won the Coupe in 1958.

LE SC BASTIA FRANCHIT L’OBSTACLE

Grâce à sa victoire face au LOSC (2-0), au stade de Furiani, le SC Bastia a décroché sa qualification pour les 16es de finale de la Coupe de France.

Invaincu depuis 3 matchs, toutes compétitions confondues, le SC Bastia a prolongé sa série en remportant le premier choc entre deux clubs de Ligue 1 de ses 32es de finale de la Coupe de France, face au LOSC Lille (2-0). Alors qu’il n’avait plus frappé depuis le 28 octobre, F. Ayité a offert une qualification méritée aux Corses en signant son 1er doublé sous les couleurs bastiaises. Plus tôt dans la journée, le Valenciennes FC, 10e de Ligue 2, a réalisé une superbe performance en prenant le meilleur sur l’OGC Nice (2-0), 11e de Ligue 1. Bien lancé par un but rapide d’A. Coulibaly, le VAFC s’est mis à l’abri avant la pause grâce à Poepon et s’est logiquement qualifié pour le tour suivant.

De son côté, le Stade de Reims est reparti du bon pied ! Auteurs d’une belle fin de mois de décembre (2 victoires consécutives avec 6 buts marqués), les Champenois n’ont pas tremblé, à Créteil, face à l’US Lusitanos Saint-Maur (DH) (1-3). Diego, Charbonnier et de Préville ont tiré leur épingle du jeu. A Saint-Denis, l’Evian TG FC a également fait respecter la hiérarchie en disposant de Bobigny (DH) (0-3). Les Roses ont fait la différence dans la dernière demi-heure avec notamment un but de leur star danoise Wass.

Dans le même temps, le FC Nantes n’a fait qu’une bouchée des Martiniquais du Club Franciscain (DH)(4-0). Sérieux et appliqués, les Canaris ont une nouvelle fois inscrit 4 buts, comme lors de leurs deux matchs de Coupe nationale déjà disputés cette saison, en Coupe de la Ligue. Non loin de là, le Stade Brestois 29 a validé son billet pour les 16es de finale de la compétition, aux dépens du Stade Lavallois (1-0), grâce à un nouveau penalty de Grougi.
