The Canadian international will be wearing red next year on a fulltime basis after coming to terms with his hometown club.
Will Johnson is coming home.
Toronto FC announced on Friday that it has acquired the Canadian international midfielder from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a conditional second round draft pick in 2017 and targeted allocation money. As per MLS policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to add another Canadian international and veteran player with MLS experience that has won two MLS Cups with two different clubs in his career,” Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. “The addition of Will Johnson will help strengthen our goal of developing a winning culture and spirit here at Toronto FC. He represents another significant piece as we continue to build a championship caliber club.”
The 28-year-old Toronto native has spent the majority of his career with MLS sides — Chicago Fire (2004-05), Real Salt Lake (2008-12), Portland Timbers (2013-15) — but also has had a few stints in Europe, most notably with Heerenveen in Holland between 2006 and 2008.
A key figure with the Canadian national team, Johnson has four goals in 38 appearances at the international level.
“I’m excited to return to my hometown of Toronto and play in front of one of the best fan bases in MLS,” Johnson said. “I look forward to this new challenge and cannot wait to meet my new teammates.”
Johmson’s signing caps off a busy week for the Reds, who also managed to land defenders Drew Moor and Steven Beitashour.
