Glorious Gor crowned Kenyan champions
Gor Mahia were on Sunday crowned SportPesa Premier League champions.
Gor saw off Muhoroni Youth 2-0 at Nyayo Stadium, which was all green and white with the glamour club's fans, to finish the league unbeaten as they emulated the great K’Ogalo side of 1976 that also won the Kenyan championship without losing a single match.
Gor Mahia also finished with an impressive 78 points, the highest collected by any team in the modern era of the Premier League.
K’Ogalo coach Frank Nuttall and his playing unit were the solid embodiment of joy during their Sunday coronation. The Scot tactician said that he was thrilled to have been a part of this history making Gor.
“The squad has been magnificent. All these players have been phenomenal and this has been a truly memorable day for me. It has been really tough. People see us winning matches but most of them don’t realize how much work, how much physical and emotional effort it takes for the players to make that possible,” he said after the trophy handover.
Ali Abondo and Michael Olunga struck once each as the league champions completed their 30-match league assignment with a bang.
Tweeted CORD leader and Gor Mahia patron Raila Odinga: “Congratulations to @OfficialGMFC for winning the @TheOfficialKPL title in outstanding fashion boasting an unblemished record of no defeats”
It was however a bad day for KCB as they succumbed to the jaws of relegation following a 1-1 draw against Western Stima. Nakuru All Stars is other relegated team from this season.
KCB’s Luke Ochieng cancelled out Stima’s lead from Fredrick Nyarombo’s goal.
While KCB despaired, City Stars celebrated as they confirmed their top league status after holding fancied Sony Sugar 1-1 at City Stadium.
Third position on the log that was being hotly contested by three teams (Bandari, Sofapaka, Muhoroni Youth) going into the final round of matches was eventually claimed by Sofapaka who beat Thika United 2-1 at Ruaraka ground to take their tally to 47 points.
All goals were scored in a frenetic second half, Vincent Omumbo opening the scoring for Thika before Sofapaka came roaring back with goals from David Mbakiye and Felly Mulumba.
Bandari, who were the immediate former occupants of position three, dropped to fourth on the log, their barren draw against league runners up Ulinzi Stars at Afraha Stadium restricting them to 46 points.
AFC Leopards were crushed 3-1 by Tusker at Kasarani Stadium, the brewers finishing fifth and the big cats eighth.
Tusker’s Jesse Were confirmed his status as the league’s top score with a brace that pushed his season’s tally to an impressive 22 goals. Former Leopards player Noah Wafula added Tusker’s third goal. Michael Khamati accounted for Leopards’ consolation strike.
Ushuru managed to snatch one point from relegated Nakuru All Stars following a barren draw at Oserian Stadium meaning that the taxmen have finally managed to finish the season in the top eight.
Chemelil Sugar and Mathare United cancelled out each other 1-1 at Chemelil Sugar Sports Complex in a result that knocked the slum boys out of a top eight finish. Alloyce Mangi scored for the sugar millers while up-and-coming Eric Johana replied for Mathare.
