BALBOA, Panama -- Arabe Unido opened its fourth Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win over visiting Montego Bay United on Wednesday at the Estadio Maracana.
Jose Gonzalez and Renan Addles scored a goal each in the first half and Enrico Small added another tally late in the match against a Jamaican side making its tournament debut.
Goalkeeper Miguel Lloyd kept a clean sheet for the host, which posted a fourth shutout in its last five SCCL matches.
The Expreso Azul took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute thanks to a nifty combination play in traffic. After receiving a return pass from Yoel Barcenas, a charging Gonzalez went in unmarked on goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett and fired in a shot from atop the penalty area for his third career SCCL goal.
Barrett gifted the current Panamanian champion a goal in the 44th minute. On a free kick following a caution issued to Montego Bay's Dwayne Holmes, Addles drilled a 28-yard free kick from the right side towards the net. The ball bounced once and seemed to surprise Barrett as it skipped to his right and into the net for a two-goal advantage.
Arabe nearly added to its lead on the hour mark off a quick counterattack. Gonzalez slid a short pass to substitute Luis Pereira, who rifled a hard shot from the right side, only to be thwarted by Barrett’s spectacular leaping save.
The custodian, however, could not stop an unmarked Small in the 79th minute. The 26-year-old midfielder headed a free kick home from point-blank range feed into the lower right corner.
Group H play resumes on August 25 as Arabe Unido hosts D.C. United on August 19.
NOTES: Arabe Unido posted a shutout for the first time in a SCCL opener.
