RECAP | EDDIES 2, INDY 0

Albert Watson's headed goal, Tomi Ameobi's strike from the spot earns FC Edmonton a win over Indy

FC Edmonton recorded a clean sheet in a 2-0 home win over Indy Eleven, with goals from Albert Watson and Tomi Ameobi leading the way.
The Eddies captain opened the scoring for the Eddies in the first half, while Ameobi would go on to double the Eddies’ lead in the second half from the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Matt VanOekel earned the clean sheet in net.
The Eddies started the match strong and almost opened the scoring on five minutes when Lance Laing worked a cross in from the left wing. Teammate Ritchie Jones collected the ball before letting go of a strike that was swallowed by goalkeeper Keith Cardona.
FC Edmonton would take the lead on 16 minutes through Watson. The defender met Laing’s in-swinging corner kick with a thumping header that found the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
VanOekel was forced into action towards the end of the first half when Indy generated some offensive momentum. VanOekel had to make two quick saves, first on Wojciech Wojick after the forward struck a shot from range and then another save from in close after Charlie Rugg attempted a shot from a tight angle.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Eddies came close to doubling their lead. Laing found Ameobi with a terrific cross, but the striker’s header from six yards out went just over the crossbar.
Eddie Edward showed some great skill just after the hour mark when the defender crossed the ball into the box after some great wing play. Daryl Fordyce met Edward’s cross with a header, but his attempt narrowly missed the net.
The Eddies struck again on 69 minutes after Laing earned his side a penalty kick. After receiving a cross-field pass from Fordyce, the Jamaican international flicked the ball in the box, striking the hand of Indy defender Judson McKinney. Ameobi stepped up and found the back of the net with a calm finish.
Edmonton’s defense would hold strong for the remaining 20 minutes of the match to earn their third clean sheet victory of the Fall Season.
“Overall it was a deserved three points,” FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. “The guys put in a good shift and created chances in both halves. It’s nice to be back in the win column, and I am delighted with the three points.”

RECAP | SILVERBACKS 2, STRIKERS 1

Pedro Mendes' brace leads Atlanta past Fort Lauderdale

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers were topped by the Atlanta Silverbacks, 2-1, on Wednesday night in North American Soccer League action at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta.
The match was capped off with a flurry of bookings late in the match, five after the 84th minute, which included three Strikers being sent off – Stefano Pinho, Karsten Smith and James Marcelin. Fort Lauderdale will be without those three players Saturday night when they host the New York Cosmos.
Atlanta’s Pedro Mendes opened and closed the game’s scoring with a pair of goals in the 41st and 66th minute. The Strikers equalized shortly after the second half restart through Walter Ramirez. The midfielder deftly placed a shot through a narrow opening at the near post for his third goal of the Fall Season to pull the Strikers even in the 49th minute of play.
It appeared that the two sides might play to a third consecutive draw this season until Mendes went unmarked and put a shot past Strikers goalkeeper Josh Ford from inside the box. The brace gives the 25-year-old Brazilian his third and fourth goals in six games.
The first half was played without a single booking being issued to either side, with the Strikers coming into the game having been whistled for a league-low 148 fouls. The two sides entered the game tied for the NASL’s fewest yellow cards with 22 for each team in 2015.
The slew of bookings started in the 84th minute with Stefano’s red following a collision with Josh Hughes. After sending the forward off, the referee again pulled a card, this one earmarked for Silverbacks’ defender Josh Hughes.
The fireworks picked up again in extra time as the Silverbacks looked to run down the clock by holding the ball in the corner. Fort Lauderdale defender Fabian Kling picked up a yellow, followed by ejections to Smith and Marcelin two minutes apart after overzealous challenges.
The loss was the first for the Strikers against the Silverbacks in more than two years. Atlanta’s victory moves them one game ahead in the all-time series, six games to five (with seven draws). The defeat also drops head coach Günter Kronsteiner’s record against the Georgia-based side to 3W-3D-1L. The Strikers are now 1-3-2 in the Fall Season.

RECAP | COSMOS 2, UNITED 1

Hunter Freeman's long-distance effort earns New York a win over Minnesota

A late long-distance golazo by Hunter Freeman helped lift the New York Cosmos to a 2-1 win over Minnesota United on Wednesday night at Shuart Stadium.
It was Freeman’s second goal in as many games. While there was some doubt whether the fullback was going for goal on a ball served toward the back post in a 2-0 win over Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, there was no doubt what Freeman was doing in the 76th minute.
Freeman briefly settled an attempted clearance before unleashing a rocket from 25 yards inside the upper right corner of the net to put the Cosmos in front, 2-1.
Minnesota United raced in front in the eighth minute on Christian Ramirez’s seventh goal of the season, tallying for the fifth consecutive game. Following a short corner, Kalif Alhassan crossed the ball in front where Daniel Mendes flicked it on at the near post. Ramirez crashed the back post and tapped in to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
The Cosmos leveled five minutes later on Restrepo’s third goal of the Fall Season. Leo Fernandes made a penetrating run before slipping a pass to Andrés Flores, who cut a ball back into the box. Restrepo didn’t get a lot on his attempt, but it was enough to elude Minnesota goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt.
Three minutes later, Flores put a shot on frame, but Hildebrandt did well to parry it over the crossbar for a Cosmos corner. The ‘keeper did the same to deny Carlos Mendes on a header inside the box in the 25th minute.
Daniel Mendes nearly put Minnesota United back in front, but the Brazilian forward put a sliding shot off the back post on the half hour. Ramirez had another golden opportunity when he was played behind the Cosmos defense, but Jimmy Maurer did well to make the save in the 36th minute.
The Cosmos continued to press for the go-ahead goal after halftime, but Hildebrandt made a tremendous diving save on a Lucky Mkosana toe-poke in the 50th minute and then got a piece of a Carlos Mendes header from the edge of the six-yard box in the 64th minute.
Finally, Freeman broke the deadlock with a brilliant strike to secure three points at home for a second consecutive game.
Raul nearly added an insurance goal in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, but his clever chip was just over the crossbar.
