Last year saw record breaking player registration numbers with a 20 per cent lift in participants playing in registered competitions and FFA is hoping for even more in 2016.
“The 2016 grassroots season is just around the corner and there are so many reasons to get involved in playing football. Anyone can join the game today as a player, coach, or referee by registering at myfootballclub.com.au,” said FFA CEO David Gallop.
“With over 1.18 million Australians playing football in registered competitions in 2015, now is the time to be involved in the world’s most popular sport.
“For junior footballers between 4-11 years, AIA Vitality MiniRoos is the fun introduction to football for girls and boys.
“Last year we saw over 214,000 AIA Vitality MiniRoos participants, an increase of 10% from 2014. You will see a selection of these participants during half time at Hyundai A-League matches around Australia this weekend.
“The Play Football Round is an ideal opportunity to highlight the entire player pathway from the girls and boys, mums and dads at the grassroots to the Women and Men as the elite levels of the Westfield W-League and Hyundai A-League,” concluded Gallop.
This season the Play Football campaign will see all nine Australian-based Hyundai A-League clubs take selected players and coaches to visit their local grassroots clubs.
Adelaide United’s Jordan Elsey will head to Para Hills Knights, Brisbane Roar’s Corey Brown will go to The Gap FC, Central Coast Mariners Assistant Coach John Hutchinson will pull on the boots for his local club Terrigal United, Melbourne City’s Ivan Franjic will go back to his old stomping ground at St Albans, Melbourne Victory’s Dylan Murnane will drop in at Green Gully Soccer Club, Newcastle Jet Nicholas Cowburn will meet old friends at the Toronto Awaba Junior Football Club, Perth Glory’s recent signing Adam Taggart will take a group of his teammates to their old club; ECU Joondalup, Sydney FC’s Max Burgess will pay a visit to Easts FC and Western Sydney Wanderers defender Scott Jamieson will be returning to his first club at Kings Langley.
The 2016 Play Football campaign will once again support the annual recruitment drive for grassroots Coaches and Referees, who along with players are the game’s greatest advocates and are two key roles that have a great influence on a player’s experience.
Players, coaches and referees can join the game by logging onto Australia's biggest online sports registration portal, which can be found at MyFootballClub.com.au.
Transfer reports: Aussies to K-League?
* Melbourne City midfielder Erik Paartalu appears bound for K-League champions Jeonbuk Motors. The Herald Sun reports Paartalu has agreed a lucrative deal with Alex Wilkinson’s former club and will fill their Asian visa spot. The 29-year-old scored seven times in 40 appearances for City. Ironically, Jeonbuk are in the same ACL group as City’s bitter rivals Melbourne Victory.
* Ex-Melbourne Victory defender Adrian Leijer is also heading to Korea, joining Suwon. Leijer left his Chinese Super League club Chongqing Lifan in recent days after agreeing to terminate the final year of his contract, with the club’s new coach wanting to recruit a new player for the club’s Asian visa spot. Leijer completed a medical at the club earlier this week and will sign a deal with the club ahead of the new K-League season
* Former Western Sydney Wanderers star Youssouf Hersi appears likely to finalise his deal with Central Coast Mariners. The Dutchman has been linked to the club for a few weeks, only for visa issues to delay the deal. But after completing a gruelling medical at the club last week, it’s understood Hersi, 33, could sign a deal with the Mariners before the window shuts. Hersi, who has been training with a club in the Netherlands for the last six months.
* Another Socceroo star appears headed to the cashed-up Chinese Super League, with Tommy Oar expected to join a side in China. Oar has been on the lookout for a new club since ending his deal with English Championship club Ipswich Town. While a move back to the Hyundai A-League was mooted, it’s understood Oar will join the likes of Trent Sainsbury, James Troisi, Tim Cahill and Matthew Spiranovic in the Middle Kingdom.
* David Carney’s switch from Newcastle Jets to Sydney FC could be completed today – if Andrew Hoole agrees to head back to the Hunter. The Jets are willing to release Carney to join the Sky Blues but have demanded youngster Hoole in exchange for the veteran attacker. Hoole has played just 11 games for Sydney FC after leaving Newcastle at the end of last season to link up with Graham Arnold at Moore Park.
