More on Watford's record breaking day from Jeremy Wilson
Watford completed a club record £8 million deal for Rennes midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure before also signing Venezuelan teenager Adalberto Penaranda and then loaning both players to Granada in La Liga.
The two deals took Watford’s total outlay this January beyond £20 million and made them the second biggest Premier League spenders this month after Newcastle United.
Like Watford, Granada is owned by the Pozzo family and the club are confident that both young prospects will develop into Premier League players after gathering first-team experience in Spain.
The signing of Doucoure followed a previous attempt last summer and was acted upon yesterday after it became evident that other Premier League clubs were also interested.
Doucouré, 23, is a product of Rennes’ youth system and made his debut for the club’s first-team during the 2012-13 season and has since played more than 70 times for a team currently sixth in Ligue 1.
Watford already have Étienne Capoue, Ben Watson, Valon Behrami and another January signing, Spanish international Mario Suárez, among their midfielders and it is understood that the decision to loan out Doucoure was also influenced by the difficulty in including all of those players in the squad list.
"The opportunity to sign Abdoulaye Doucouré now was one we wanted to act upon, given our long-standing interest in the player,” said Scott Duxberry, the Watford chief executive.
“He is very much part of Watford’s future plans, and in the time between now and pre-season he’ll be experiencing high-level competitive football in Spain.”
Another major signing for the future is Penaranda from Udinese, who is rated among the outstanding young strikers to have moved from South America to Europe in recent years. He has scored four goals this season in 13 matches on loan from Udinese at Granada, where he will now remain until the summer of 2017. Like Doucoure, Penaranda has agreed a permanent contract at Watford until 2020.
Watford have also signed Nordin Amrabat, Costel Pantilimon and Suarez this month but they did miss out on recruiting Liverpool striker Jerome Sinclair. An offer was made but there were difficulties in agreeing a fee, with Liverpool understood to value Sinclair at £4 million. The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer, meaning that the fee for any summer move to Watford will now be determined by a tribunal. Watford are currently 10th in the Premier League, five points off a Europa League place.

Stoppage time
Of course there's still more time to get 'those last-minute deals over the line'. So long as initial paperwork has been 'lodged' or if your name is Benjani Mwaruwari or Andrey Arshavin you've got as long as you want. No flipping, please.

And some stragglers
Yohan Benalouane has left Leicester on loan to join Fiorentina.
Ajax's Johnny Heitinga has announced his retirement from football.
Middlesbrough have taken Ritchie de Laet from Leicester on loan and Standard Liege's Julien de Sart on a three-year deal.
QPR's Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has gone up the M1 to join Milton Keynes on loan.

Biggest European transfer of the window is complete
Giannelli Imbula signs for Stoke on a five and a half year contract for £18.3m from Porto.
Here's John Percy with the full story:
Mark Hughes has issued another huge statement of intent with the club record £18.3million signing of Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula.
Hughes, the Stoke City manager, completed the capture of his No. 1 January target on the final day on a five-and-a-half year deal, after weeks of negotiations, to shatter the club’s previous transfer record by some distance.
And Hughes also confirmed the Daily Telegraph’s story from January 8th that Saido Berahino, the West Bromwich Albion striker, was firmly on the radar before Stoke’s Premier League rivals made it clear they would not be selling in this transfer window.
Stoke’s interest in Berahino is likely to be revived in the summer but the arrival of Imbula, a French defensive midfielder, is being viewed as a significant coup by the Potters.
Marco van Ginkel has left the club to join PSV on loan until the end of the season.

Jim White is going around the grounds
And there is precisely nish happening apart from 'getting' the Imbula deal at Stoke 'over the line'. There was a rumour that Charles N'Zogbia was moving to Sunderland from Aston Villa but it's not happening.
Sky's Gary Cotterill bid farewell from Upton Park saying it was 'this grand old ground's last transfer deadline day'. Blimey. Weep for poor Upton Park. It will never see its like again. When I think of the Boleyn in the future I shall remember all the shots of Mr Cotterill on the forecourt.

Done deal
Swansea sign Holland midfielder Leroy Fer on loan from QPR until the end of the season.

Imbula update
A move that would be the biggest in Europe of the window is still being negotiated by Stoke. Everything's agreed, though, so there's no reason for the Oatcake-eaters to fret ... yet.
