USL newcomer San Antonio unveiled its first player signing on Tuesday: former Colorado Rapids midfielder Carlos Alvarez, a 25-year-old California product who played 51 MLS games for the Rapids and and Chivas USA after joining MLS as the second overall pick at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
“Carlos is a player I’ve admired and respected for a long time,” saidSan Antonio coach Darren Powell. “He is a creative attacking player that’s looking for a good run of games, and we envision him being a big part of our roster this season.”
Alvarez, an all-American at the University of Connecticut, played for the USL's Charlotte Independence on loan from the Rapids in 2015.

Palmer-Brown, 18, headed to European giant FC Porto

American defenders are certainly in vogue. After Jorge Villafana andOmar Gonzalez, sold to Mexican clubs in December, and Saturday's $5 million deal that sent Matt Miazga from the New York Red Bulls to Chelsea, 18-year-old defender Erik Palmer-Brown is headed from Sporting Kansas City to FC Porto in Portugal for the remainder of 2016. Porto is considered Europe's leading importer of talent from the Americas.

Porto specializes in signing South Americans -- mostly Brazilians (DecoHulkDanilo, among others) and Colombians (Radamel FalcaoJackson Martinez and James Rodriguez) but also Argentines and Uruguayans -- and turning around and selling them for huge transfer fees. But it has branched out and is now the leading importer of Mexican players into European.

The signing of Miguel Layun (on loan from Watford) and Jesus Corona last summer gave The Dragoes five Mexican players under contract along with Hector HerreraDiego Reyes (on loan to Real Sociedad) and goalkeeper Raul Gudino.

For the last few years, Palmer-Brown had been linked with a move to Italy's Juventus, but Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes credited the MLS club's good relationship with Porto in helping seal the loan deal.

"We feel this is a good move for both Erik and the club," Vermes said in a statement. "Over the years, we have formed a good relationship with Porto and we see this as a great opportunity to further Erik's development as a player and person."

Palmer-Brown has played 13 matches for Sporting Kansas City in all competitions since signing in August 2013. He made his Sporting KC debut in May 2014, becoming the club's youngest player to appear in a competitive match (17 years, 24 days) and the youngest defender to start an MLS match.

The Lee's Summit, Missouri, native, a Sporting KC academy player since the age of 13, played behind Miazga and highly regarded Tottenham teenager Cameron Carter-Vickers on the 2015 U.S. Under-20 World Cup team. Gedion Zelalem, Palmer-Brown and Carter-Vickers are all eligible for 2017 team as well.

Palmer-Brown  joins one of Europe's most successful soccer clubs, winner of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (1987, 2004) and UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League (2003, 2011) twice each. It has won 27 Primeira Liga titles and 16 Portuguese cups.

Perhaps its most amazing accomplishment is that it has finished in the top three of the Primeira Liga every season for the last 39 years.
