Nanjing: AFC Champions League 2015 quarter-finalists Guangzhou Evergrande went top of the Chinese Super League (CSL) standings on Wednesday when a stoppage-time Ricardo Goulart strike saw the reigning Chinese champions edge Jiangsu Guoxin-Sainty as previous table-toppers Shanghai SIPG were held to a 2-2 draw at Henan Jianye.
Guangzhou went into the Round 22 clash trailing Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side by a point as the CSL resumed after a brief hiatus for the 2015 EAFF East Asian Cup tournament in Wuhan and were heading towards a goalless draw as Wednesday’s match at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre went into stoppage-time.
And in the third minute of time added on Zheng Long set up 2015 ACL leading scorer Goulart (pictured) for the winner which, when allied with Shanghai SIPG’s dropped points in Zhengzhou took Guangzhou to the top of the table with 47 points, one more than the former leaders, who have last year’s ACL top scorer Asamoah Gyan and Dario Conca, a 2013 ACL winner with Evergrande, in their ranks.
Guangzhou will take on Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final at Kashiwa Stadium on August 25. The 2013 ACL champions will then host Kashiwa in the return fixture at the Tianhe Stadium on September 15.
