Kuala Lumpur: Pahang and Johor Darul Ta’zim continued their winning Malaysia Super League ways on Wednesday as the AFC Cup quarter-finalists both recorded victories to maintain their respective title pushes.
In Kuantan, a Dickson Nwakaeme brace helped league leaders Pahang register a 2-0 success over struggling ATM to notch up their twelfth domestic win and remain two points ahead of second-placed JDT.
Former Kelantan striker Nwakaeme opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a low drive, before the Nigerian duly doubled his tally and his side’s advantage with a firm header on 34 minutes.
Despite failing to add to their tally in the second period, Pahang will be happy with the momentum they are building ahead of their clash over two legs with Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol in the AFC Cup’s last eight.
Meanwhile, JDT ensured they remained hot on the heels of Pahang at the Malaysia Super League summit courtesy of a comfortable 4-0 defeat of Sime Darby at the Larkin Stadium in Johor.
Argentine ace Luciano Figueroa broke the deadlock shortly after the half hour mark for the hosts, with Asraruddin Putra Omar heading home to make it 2-0 moments before the break.
Safiq Rahim added JDT’s third on 49 minutes, before Figueroa notched his second of the night courtesy of a magnificent volley to seal a resounding win for Mario Gomez’s charges.
JDT are set to continue their quest for AFC Cup glory when they entertain South China in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on August 25.
