Mumbai City FC finally got their campaign underway after four games, recording a 2-0 victory over Delhi Dynamos FC at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday night. Mumbai's second home game in succession saw India striker Sunil Chhetri score two gaols in the 13th and 74th minutes of the game, much to the delight of the spectators (17,393) in the stadium.
The loss saw Delhi's three-match winning streak come to an end. It was done by a Mumbai side which looked compact from the start of the game, intent on getting a positive result.
The first goal of the game came early in the first half, a result of brilliant interplay between Sony Norde and Chhetri, glimpses of which were seen in the previous game too. The move, started by Chhetri, saw the ball fall for him after Norde’s shot was blocked, and Chhetri showed good composure to latch on the volley. He adjusted his stride and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Toni Doblas in the bottom corner. Delhi had a wonderful chance of their own not long after that, but Florent Malouda failed to beat goalie Subrata Paul who was equal to the task and went down at the right time to keep out the Frenchman’s effort.

The second half saw more chances fall Mumbai's way. Chhetri turned provider for Norde, with a lobbed pass sending him clear on goal but Doblas was sharp in keeping the striker at bay. Singam Subhash Singh nearly scored a goal with an attempt from 40 yards out but his effort crashed against the crossbar. The Dynamos couldn’t keep the Mumbai attack at bay for much longer though, as the tricky Norde got into the box and put a low cross in from a fine angle for Chhetri to tap in from close range, taking his tally to two goals from two games for Mumbai and justifying his steep price tag, and picking up the Hero-of-the-Match award.
The game still saw plenty of action towards the end. Substitute Ashutosh Mehta’s header was kept out by Doblas and Robin Singh grazed the Mumbai crossbar with his header but the home defence did enough to keep their goal intact and record a clean sheet to go along with the win.
Delhi still lie second in the table but now they have a negative goal difference whereas Mumbai City’s win lifts them up from the bottom of the table to seventh, level on four points with Kerala Blasters FC who are ahead on goal difference.
