New York City FC announce their first captain ahead of 2015 expansion season
New York City FC took the field on Sunday for their first match of their first-ever season -- the perfect time to reveal the name of the player who will wear the armband in 2015.
The anouncement came via Twitter ahead of their afternoon match against the Jacksonville Armada.
David Villa was the first player signed by NYCFC when he was officially unveiled on June 2, 2014 before participating with Spain at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The 33-year-old forward is the all-time leading scorer in Spain national team history and the most experienced player on the NYCFC roster.
During a storied career in Europe, he won both the FIFA World Cup and EURO championship titles with Spain as well as the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2011.
New York City FC sign 29-year-old Slovakian international forward Adam Nemec
New York City FC added another piece to their attacking corps on Monday, signing 29-year-old Slovakian international forward Adam Nemec. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-3 striker comes to NYCFC from 2. Bundesliga club Union Berlin, where he scored 14 goals in 65 appearances from 2012-15. This season, Nemec made just five substitute appearances while starting four games and scoring twice for Union Berlin II in the Regionalliga.
“Adam is a different type of striker than we have on the roster so far, which gives us a different dimension up front and options on how our forward line can play,” NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a club statement. “It’s important to have players with a range of strengths and attributes. He’s a strong and powerful athlete and will add a real goalscoring threat to our team.”
Nemec has appeared 14 times for the Slovakian national team, scoring two goals – including one against FYR Macedonia in a crucial Euro 2016 qualifying win in November – on the international stage. He joins Designated Player David Villa, No. 2 overall SuperDraft selectionKhiry Shelton and Expansion Draft selections Patrick Mullins and Tony Taylor as the five forwards on NYCFC’s roster.
“Joining New York City FC is a fantastic opportunity for me,” Nemec said in the club statement. “I hope to make an immediate impact and help get the team off to a great start as we begin our inaugural season. I know that being part of an ambitious club like New York City FC will give me the chance to show what I am capable of and maintain my place on the Slovakian national team as we look to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals.”
