Al Ain dug deep to overcome a determined Emirates side with a 1-0 win in Ras Al Khaimah in Round 13 of the Arabian Gulf League yesterday.
A solitary goal from defender Ismail Ahmed extended Al Ain’s lead at the top of the table to nine points as Al Nasr drew 1-1 with Fujairah.
The defeat meant Emirates have now lost five consecutive games and passed up the chance to overtake Al Jazira in the standings.
The first half ended goalless at the Emirates Club Stadium, although a curling free-kick from Al Ain’s midfield magician Omar Abdulrahman just before the interval forced Emirates goalkeeper Ali Saqr into a wonderful flying save to keep the two sides level.
Al Ain finally made the breakthrough in the 76th minute and it was towering centre-back Ismail who grabbed the glory by out-leaping everyone in the area to head home from a corner.
Al Nasr moved above Al Ahli and into second spot in the table but had to settle for a point against Fujairah.
The home side came back from a goal down at Fujairah Stadium, securing a draw courtesy of an unfortunate own goal by Mubarak Saeed.
Salem Saleh had given Nasr the lead but they failed to hold on for all three points.
The visitors registered their first shot on target after just five minutes as Jonathan Pitroipa set up Luis Jimenez for a strike at goal, but goalkeeper Mohammad Salem was able to make the save.
By the ninth minute Jimenez had struck the woodwork, this time his curling corner kick bouncing straight off the top of the crossbar.
The deadlock was eventually broken by Nasr in the 33rd minute through a well-worked team goal. Jimenez played Pitroipa through.
He went on a mazy run to set up Saleh, who swept home with a right-footed finish.
Nasr were forced into a half-time change as combative midfielder Khalid Jalal failed to recover from a shoulder injury, with Ali Hussain replacing him.
But the momentum remained with the visitors, and in the 64th minute Nilmar saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.
In the 76th minute, Fujairah found the equaliser against the run of play as Khalil Khamis’s free-kick was nodded into his own net by the Nasr defender Saeed.
Five minutes later, Nilmar came close to restoring the lead, but Salem was alert to save after a good cross from Ahmed Ibrahim, and the points were shared.
In the late game, hosts Al Wasl fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in a tense encounter at the Zabeel Stadium. Fabio Lima’s header cancelled out Henrique Luvannor’s strike with both goals coming in the first half.
