Omar Gonzalez, arguably the most dominating center back in MLS history, has been transferred from the LA Galaxy to Mexican club Pachuca for an undisclosed transfer fee. Gonzalez, a first-generation Mexican-American with lots of family in Mexico, has been rumored to be headed to Liga MX for several years even after he re-signed with the Galaxy in 2013. His transfer is a huge boon to the Galaxy in terms of its salary budget management.

The Galaxy had to use TAM to pay down his salary in 2015 after the signing of Giovani dos Santos. It no longer has to worry about having to do that again -- on a full-year salary in 2016 -- but it will also be able to use its share of the transfer fee as general allocation money.

Gyasi Zardes had been on the radar at English club Reading, but Gonzalez's transfer will allow the Galaxy to maneuver to re-sign Zardes, who enters his fourth MLS season with the Galaxy.

Gonzalez, 27, was selected by the Galaxy with the third overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. He was named MLS Rookie of the Year (2009), Defender of the Year (2011) and to four MLS Best XI teams (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014) in addition to winning three MLS Cup titles (2011, 2012, 2014) with the Galaxy.

Gonzalez played 180 games over seven seasons over the Galaxy. He became a regular on the U.S. national team in 2013 and started two games at the 2014 World Cup. But his playing time was reduced in 2015 as he appeared in only six of 20 games and was not called up for the Concacaf Cup match against Mexico in October or the two World Cup 2018 qualifiers in November. He has 30 caps.

Pachuca slumped in the Torneo Apertura, finishing in 13th place in the 18-team league. It is a regular contender in Liga MX but has not won a league title since 2007. It has also won five Concacaf club titles.

Gonzalez is the second Mexican-American who has been transferred from an MLS club to a Mexican club in the offseason. The champion Portland Timbers sold defender Jorge Villafana to Santos for a reported $1 million. Other MLS players rumored to have interest are Real Salt Lake free agents Luis Gil and Luis Silva.
