The False 9: Round 13 - Four-game ban would be fair enough for O'Donovan

The way some people have reacted to Roy O'Donovan's run-in with Manny Muscat, you could be forgiven for thinking the Central Coast striker was the devil incarnate. But False 9 is cutting him a bit of slack.

O'Donovan obviously made a bad choice when he threw his head at the Wellington defender and he will pay a price after being cited to appear before the A-League's disciplinary committee, but calls for him to get suspended for eight games or even the rest of the season are crazy.
False 9 reckons a four-match ban would be sufficient. You can't allow O'Donovan's act to go unpunished, but you shouldn't go over the top about it either.
It has been called a headbutt, but it wasn't a genuine headbutt.
O'Donovan threw the side of his head into the side of Muscat's head and while it certainly wouldn't have tickled, the Irishman wasn't exaggerating that much when he said Muscat had "gone down like a movie star".
The 30 year-old knows what he did was dumb, but he was provoked by an elbow to his head from Muscat, who then gave O'Donovan a mouthful as well. Muscat has already received a two-match ban for his part.

Muscat gets two weeks for elbow

Wellington Phoenix defender Manny Muscat has been handed down a two match suspension after elbowing Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O'Donovan in their clash on the weekend.
The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) - consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Contini and Alan Davidson - reconvened today to consider a Citation Incident involving Manny Muscat of Wellington Phoenix (the Player) which arose in or around the 58th minute of Wellington Phoenix’s Round 13 Hyundai A-League Match against Central Coast Mariners on Thursday, 31 December 2015.
The Player was cited by the MRP in accordance with the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations (Regulations).  In reviewing the Citation Incident during this afternoon’s meeting, the MRP took into consideration all of the available evidence, including the submissions lodged by Wellington Phoenix on behalf of the Player.
The MRP determined that the Player committed the offence of R2 – Assault on a Player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball) against Roy O’Donovan (Central Coast Mariners). The MRP proposed a sanction of the Mandatory Match suspension plus one (1) additional Hyundai A-League match, being the minimum sanction for the offence under the Regulations. This equates to two (2) Hyundai A-League matches.
