Kampala — As Cranes started preparations for the Chan tournament on Saturday, Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic cautioned the Cecafa triumphant team about not being guaranteed of automatic slots.
"Our players have a tendency of relaxing and living on their past performance," said Micho. Few, however, could have predicted Shafiq Bakaki to miss out on the final 23-man squad that Micho is expected to announce today.
The Vipers defender was one of three players left behind as Cranes departed Kampala for a residential camp at Njeru Technical Centre.
Last March, Bakaki marked his first international appearance with a solid display, shutting out another debutant Odion Ighalo as the Cranes recorded a famous 1-0 win in a friendly against Nigeria. The Nigerian has since blossomed, scoring 30 goals in the calendar year while Bakaki switched positions from right back to central defence as well as changing clubs from Express to Vipers.
