Chennaiyin FC get their first victory over hapless FC Goa

Mehrajuddin Wadoo and Hans Mulder were the goalscorers as Chennaiyin FC recorded their first victory of the season.

If the Indian Super League had a system of promotion or relegation, FC Goa would by now be ‘favourites for relegation.’ It’s a testimony to the topsy-turvy nature that this league has shown since its inception that the team that were finalists just the previous season are yet to win a point from their first three matches in the next.
FC Goa have been the better team for many parts of their previous matches but, against Chennaiyin on Thursday, they were completely outclassed by a team that seemed to be out to prove their manager wrong. Materazzi did question the quality of many of his players and he seems to have been answered by the players themselves.  Indian striker Jeje didn’t play the match but Chennaiyin’s midfield duo of Hans Mulder and Mehrajuddin Wadoo were the ones that took the game to the opposition. The second half was all about a determined Chennaiyin defence not only fending off Goa attacks, but also becoming the originators for counter attacks.
Its a rematch of last year’s thrilling final but the two teams have pretty lame duck starts considering the circumstances. Chennaiyin have got one point in their last two matches with their last match being a rather embarrassing defeat to Delhi Dynamos at home. Marco Materazzi is not a man who minces his words and made sure that his team is aware of his unhappiness with their performances through the comments he made not just after the last match but even before this one.
Zico, on the other hand, has been more motivational than critical in his comments and rightly so, since it is fair to say that lady luck has some role to play in Goa’s lack of points in the ISL thus far. The match is being played out in Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, also called the Marina stadium which had watched in stunned silence as their team slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Delhi Dynamos with below par performances from almost all players. Lets see which of these two teams can find their feet today.
Here are the starting XIs:

John Arne Riise had said in an interview today that he feels that Indian players in the team are improving and named Jayesh Rane and Jeje in particular. Couldn’t agree with him more. Chennaiyin FC’s game against Delhi Dynamos was enjoyable only when any of the two were on the ball. Jayesh Rane was a real handfull for the Delhi defendors from the flanks while Jeje was strong and energetic through the middle. It is quite a credit to the Delhi defense that they were able to stop either of them from scoring. Can FC Goa do the same. Seeing their defensive failures in their last two matches, it is safe to say that Zico may have drawn special plans for Jeje and Rane.
