Barcelona and Real Madrid each have seven players on 59-strong list
• David Ospina, Christian Atsu and Massimo Luongo shock inclusions
The 59-man longlist for the 2015 Ballon d’Or has been apparently leaked, with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo named alongside Arsenal’s David Ospina, Bournemouth’s Christian Atsu and Massimo Luongo, who spent last season at Swindon Town in League One.
The 59 names, obtained by Mundo Deportivo in Spain, will be cut to a 23-man shortlist in December, prior to the awards ceremony in January of next year. Fifa’s Football Committee – which includes the Uefa president Michel Platini, the Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, the Watford coach Harry Kewell and Pelé, among others – helped to compile the list.
Luongo and Eduardo Vargas – who scored just three goals for a relegated Queens Park Rangers team – were presumably chosen for their international exploits, with Australia’s Luongo named player of the tournament in January’s Asian Cup and Vargas playing a key part in Chile’s Copa América triumph, along with Gary Medel, Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Bravo.
Bournemouth’s Christian Atsu, who is on loan from Chelsea and spent last season at Everton, is another to have been rewarded for his international form, having been named player of the tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Arsenal’s Ospina may have made the cut, but there was no place for Manchester City’s Joe Hart or Juventus’s Gianluigi Buffon, who won a domestic double with Juventus and helped his side to the Champions League final in June. Manchester City’s David Silva, Real Madrid’s Raphaël Varane, Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, Bayern Munich’s Philipp Lahm, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets, Arda Turan, Marco Reus and Douglas Costa are just some of the other surprise omissions.
Barcelona and Real Madrid both have seven players nominated, while Juventus have six players included. Manchester City have five players named, although two of these – Kevin De Bruyne and Nicolás Otamendi – were largely included for efforts with their former clubs, Wolfsburg and Valencia respectively.
Just two English players – Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane – are named, and there are also only two Italian players, Andrea Pirlo and Giorgio Chiellini.
