Bradley Wright-Phillips won’t need to wait a week to receive an award as he will take home the MLS Player of the Week honor as voted by the NASR (North American Soccer Reporters).
Wright-Phillips had a phenomenal game against the Columbus Crew, netting two goals in his seventh multi-goal game of 2016. He also increased his lead in the Golden Boot race, one ahead of NYCFC’s David Villa and six ahead of Montreal Impact’s Ignacio Piatti. Wright-Phillips has been a key contributor to the team’s 15 game unbeaten streak, scoring 14 goals since July.
The New York Red Bulls single and all-time leading goalscorer has cemented his name in the conversation for MLS MVP despite attention drawn to more star-powered players such as Villa and Giovinco. Over the last four seasons, Wright-Phillips has tallied 68 goals total, scoring no less than 15 goals a season. While it may seem unlikely, Bradley is still four goals away from tying his own single season record at 27 goals.
New York Red Bulls will travel to Talen Energy Stadium to play the Philadelphia Union on Sunday afternoon. It will be Wright-Phillips’ last chance to increase his regular season stats for 2016.
