Manyavar named as title sponsor of Bangladesh Premier League

Manyavar, an Indian fashion chain active in Bangladesh for three years, has been named as the title sponsor of the eleven-team Bangladesh Premier Football League that kicks-off on Tuesday (Apr 7) at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here.Senior Vice President of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) and chairman of the Professional Football League Committee Abdus Salam Murshedy introduced the new sponsors in presence of BFF President Kazi M Salahuddin at a signing cecemony at the conference room of BFF House on Sunday afternoon.Managing Director of the league sponsor Vintage Denim Ltd (Manyavar-Bangladesh) Imran Islam Chowdhury and BFF Vice President Abdus Salam Murshedy signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations initially for one year.Addresing the pressmen, Imran Islam Chowdhury expressed his satisfaction at associating with football and hoped that Bangladesh's position in FIFA world rankings will go up to between "60th to 70th" in the near future, adding that they are keen to sponsor football for atleast five years.The owner of the franchise in Bangladesh, Imran Islam Chowdhury hoped to create a long term relation with football. "We have high hopes regarding the future of football and we hope to build a bridge that will link Manyavar and BFF for a long time." BFF president Kazi Salahuddin welcomed Manyavar to the field of football. "We welcome Manyavar in the evergreen field of football, we have every hope that the relationship will be a long-term one," said the BFF president."We are for the first time playing in the World Cup Qualifers directly, we need more money for football, we were not getting enough money (for the league) from the sponsor, but we make a new start from today (Sunday)," Salahuddin further said. BFF senior vice president Abdus Salam Murshedy said a good number of satellite channels have expressed their aspiration to broadcast 40 to 50 percent of the league matches live. Representatives of official partners, Managing Director of Treasure Securities Fazle Elahi, DMD of Pragati Insurance Co Maj (rtd) Saeed Obaidul Karim and BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the league committee has decided give Tk 25 lakh to all the eleven participating teams as appearance money. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club is likley to play Farashganj SC in the opening match on Tuesday.The league matches will be held on home and away basis but the first round matches will be held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.

Sk Jamal cruise to opening win

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club started their title-defence in style with a 4-1 win against Farashganj SC in the opening match of the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

The defending champions conceded an early goal but showed character to bounce back, thanks to their build-up game from the deep which exposed the inexperienced Farashganj backline time and again.

The opening match of the eight edition of the top-tier professional league witnessed the introduction of magic spray and some bold decisions by the match officials, who were instructed to maintain international standard to get rid of unnecessary tackles around the danger zone.

Though the match got off to a slow start, Farashganj took a surprise lead in the 10th minute from a penalty. Referee Mizanur Rahman showed no hesitation in awarding the promoted side the spot-kick when Kesto Kumar brought down Peter Akinyele inside the box.

The Nigerian forward sent Sheikh Jamal 'keeper Mazharul Islam Himel the wrong way as the Old Dhaka outfit showed signs of replicating their 2-0 win over the Dhanmondi giants during the fifth edition of the league. But Sheikh Jamal had other ideas this time around.

It took only five minutes for Sheikh Jamal to get the equaliser as left-back Yeamin Ahmed Munna's cross was poked in by Haitian striker Wedson Anselme. However, the new powerhouse of Bangladesh football had to wait for more than half an hour to take the lead as Farashganj goalkeeper Sujan Chowdhury kept them at bay with two brilliant saves.

Three minutes into the second though, amid heavy drizzle, Gambian forward Landing Darboe put Sheikh Jamal ahead with a 30-yard free-kick. Farashganj, however, never looked like giving up as they kept on playing pressing football but their inexperience resulted in conceding two more goals.

National team's skipper Mamunul Islam made it 3-1 in the 75th minute with a powerful left-footed drive from 25 yards out before Darboe completed the rout in the first minute of stoppage time with a placing shot from inside the box. 

“I am happy with full points from the opening match but not satisfied with the way the boys played,” said Sheikh Jamal coach Maruful Haque, who praised Farashganj SC for playing attacking football.

“The foreigners made the difference,” said Farashganj coach Rezaul Haque Jamal. “We have come here to play positive football and will continue to do so throughout the season.”

জাতীয় ফুটবল দলের সাবেক অধিনায়ক ও প্রয়াত কিংব্যাক মোনেম মুন্নার পরিবারকে আর্থিক সহায়তা দিচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ড (বিসিবি)। ৫ লাখ টাকা অনুদান পাচ্ছে মুন্নার পরিবার। গতকাল বিসিবির পরিচালনা পর্ষদের সভায় এ সিদ্ধান্ত হয়। বিসিবি সভাপতি নাজমুল হাসান পাপন জানান, মুন্নার স্ত্রী সুরভী মোনেমের আবেদনের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে এ অনুদান দেয়া হচ্ছে। পাপন বলেন, মুন্নার পরিবার আর্থিক অনটনের মধ্যে রয়েছে। মানবিক কারণেই তাদের পাশে দাঁড়াচ্ছে বিসিবি।
