Former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett thinks it is a great move from the South African Football Association in appointing Neil Tovey as technical director.
Bartlett believes Tovey’s experience and background will play a key part in his new role, and will help put the necessary structures in place.
"Obviously, with his experience, he will be able to put structures in place, and I think structures need to be put specifically in grass roots level… I think he's got the knowledge for that," Bartlett tells Kickoff.com.
The former Golden Arrows boss also feels the absence of a technical director has been the reason for the national team’s decline in performance.
“It is the reason why our national teams are not doing well, because there was no real structures in place at grass roots level.
“We need to get the right people in the right places to make sure that we can get better players for Bafana Bafana... That is very important and that is going to be Neil's main job now."
The former Charlton athletic striker says he was not aware of 'SAFCA', who have since expressed anger at the appointment of a technical director.
"I didn't know there was a coaches association in the country, but you know an appointment will always have people who won’t be happy,” he adds.
However, the Bafana second highest all-time goalscorer has urged the former Kaizer Chiefs defender to focus on development and coaching structures.
"With that said, Tovey has got to make sure he oversees all nine provinces and gets the right people to get development for young players back on track again.
“He should also get some programmes to get more coaches qualified, because in order to get better players you need better coaches and coaches need education."
