Cork too strong for Gypsies

Cork City 4-0 Bohemians
Mark O’Sullivan’s magical first half brace decided this Premier Division clash between second and fifth in the table at an overcast Turner’s Cross last night.
The former Avondale United man broke Bohs hearts almost single-handedly scoring in the third and 27th minutes of a very much one sided contest.
Ex-Bohs winger Steve Beattie supplied the cross and O’Sullivan did the rest claiming his ninth goal after just three minutes.
And minutes later, his back header from Karl Sheppard’s cross, came back off the post with Dean Delaney stranded.
Then on 27 minutes O’Sullivan fired home after Liam Miller rolled a free kick to him after skipper Johnny Dunleavy had been fouled.
Garry Buckley and Johnny Dunleavy were both close to goals either side of half-time before Colin Healy made it 3-0 from a 73rd minute spot kick after man of the match O’Sullivan was upended by Dave Mulcahy.
The nearest Bohs came to goals was from a Keith Buckley drive and a Jake Kelly free kick mid-way through the second half.
Cork closed the game out to collect the points in a commanding 4-0 victory with a Danny Morrissey strike two minutes from the end.

St Pat's make hard work of seeing off 10-man Galway

St Patrick's Athletic 3 Galway United 1

Chris Forrester’s seventh goal in as many games, and a brace from Conan Byrne, gave St. Pat’s a seventh straight league win.

But, in truth, they made hard work of seeing off 10-man Galway at Richmond Park last night.
The sides swapped goals in an action-packed opening.
Forrester put Saints ahead on eight minutes with the simplest of his 10 league goals this season, tapping in Byrne’s low cross.
Galway stunned the home crowd to equalise within three minutes.
Stephen Walsh’s through ball caught Saints square for the run of Jake Keegan who confidently sidefooted past Brendan Clarke to the net.
The busy Winn then kept Galway levelat teh break with a string of fine saves.
But teh Galway keeper cost his side dearly ten minutes into the second half.
The keeper’s poor attempted clearance struck Byrne and he then pushed the Saints winger to the ground after he’d raced in behind him.
Referee Rob Harvey pointed to the spot and gave Winn a straight red card.
Byrne drove the penalty to the net despite replacement keeper Ger Hanley diving the right way.
Saints struggled to create chances thereafter before finally adding a third goal a minute into added time.
Byrne’s angled drive found the corner of the net after Hanley had parried efforts from him and Morgan Langley.
ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC – CLARKE; O’BRIEN, MCELENEY, DESMOND, BERMINGHAM; CHAMBERS; FORRESTER (VERDON, 81), BRENNAN (MORRIS, 81); BYRNE, MCGRATH, GREENE (LANGLEY, 87).

Brandon Miele keeps up scoring streak as Shamrock Rovers beat Drogheda United

Drogheda United 0 Shamrock Rovers 1

BRANDON Miele kept up his hot scoring streak to settle this hard-fought SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash at United Park and extend Shamrock Rovers’ good run of domestic results.
It was no surprise to see Rovers come out all guns blazing, looking for an early goal to keep their slender title hopes alive.
They should have got one in the second minute when Gary McCabe planted a free kick onto the head of left-back Luke Byrne who got his jump all wrong and the ball sailed harmlessly wide.
Rovers then created a similar chance from open play as Simon Madden swung the ball in from the right towards Gavin Brennan whose header flew narrowly wide.
The Hoops’ next opportunity stemmed from careless play by Drogs centre-half Robert O’Reilly as he was dispossessed by Danny North. The ball went wide to Gavin Brennan who squared back into the path of North and his shot was blocked by the head of Joe Gorman.
Drogheda responded with a good 10-minute spell during which Tiarnan Mulvenna blazed over the bar and MarkHughes drove well wide, so it was somewhat against the run of play when Rovers struck the lead goal just after the half-hour.
They counter-attacked from a Drogheda corner and great pressure from Miele forced Hughes into giving the ball away. Miele burst clear on goal and slotted calmly past keeper Micheal Schlingermann to put Rovers ahead.
The game swung from end to end on the restart but with no clear-cut chances until the hour mark when Drogheda should have levelled.
Michael Daly’s low centre was met by Ger Pender, making his first start since moving from Cabinteely, and the big number 11 deflected the ball goal-wards only for David Webster to get a touch to take it wide.
Alan Byrne headed over the bar from the resulting corner kick as the Boynesiders continued to make life hard for the Tallaght men and as the game ticked into the final 10 minutes Rovers still had that slenderest of leads.
Drogheda found another gear and pressed hard for an equaliser but couldn’t generate a clear-cut chance, the closest to an equaliser coming on 89 minutes when Sean Brennan had a long-range free kick blocked by Rovers’ defensive wall.
DROGHEDA UNITED: Schlingermann; M Daly, Byrne, O’Reilly, Gorman; Duffy, Thornton, Hughes, Mulvenna; Brennan; Pender. Subs: Marks for Pender (65min), Maher for Hughes (77min), McKenna for Mulvenna (84min).
SHAMROCK ROVERS: Hyland; Madden, Webster, Kenna, Byrne; McCabe, Cregg; Miele, R Brennan, G Brennan; North. Subs: Drennan for North (79min), Kavanagh for R Brennan (86min).
Referee: Paul McLaughlin (Monaghan)

Mark O’Sullivan paves way for Cork to sink toothless Bohs

Cork city 4 Bohemians 0

Cork City stretched their unbeaten league run to 11 games as they eased past Bohemians at Turner’s Cross.

wo first-half goals from Mark O’Sullivan paved the way for a dominant City side and they never looked like being denied the points.
In truth, the outcome was never really in doubt as O’Sullivan’s opener arrived in the third minute as he got on the end of a good Steven Beattie cross. Buoyed by that, they controlled proceedings for much of the half, benefiting from good interplay from the midfield trio of Liam Miller, Garry Buckley and John Dunleavy.
O’Sullivan nearly made it two with a header from a Karl Sheppard cross which rebounded off the post and then Sheppard himself went close, Dean Delany denying him.
Apart from a Jake Kelly effort from distance which whistled over the bar, Bohs weren’t offering much in an attacking sense and City were more than good value for the second goal, which came in the 27th minute.
From a free-kick 25 yards out, Miller rolled the ball to O’Sullivan and his low drive evaded Delany’s dive and settled in the bottom corner. Ismahil Akinade did have a half-chance for Bohs after that, shooting across the face of goal.
The tempo dropped considerably in the second half, but the majority of the 3,204 crowd were happy as City remained on top.
Kelly did come close to a Bohs goal with a free-kick which came back off the bar but the third goal arrived soon after that. After Beattie was fouled by Dave Mulcahy, Colin Healy – playing at right-back – fired past Delany.
There was no let-up to City’s attacking and with two minutes of normal time left, one sub, Ross Gaynor, set up another, Danny Morrissey, to make it four with a smart volley.
CORK CITY – McNulty; Healy, Bennett (Folan 79), Murray, O’Connor; Dunleavy, Miller (Morrissey 79); Beattie, Buckley, Sheppard (Gaynor 58); O’Sullivan.
BOHEMIANS – Delany; Lopes, Prendergast, Mulcahy, Best; Kelly (Byrne 81), Creevy, Wearen (Moore h-t), Evans (O’Brien 76); Akinade, Buckley.
