Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder William Kizito Luwagga has said this is the best chance for the national team to break the jinx and qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Luwagga who signed last month to join Portugal’s Premeira Liga side Rio Ave told Africanfootball.com in an interview that having Botswana, Comoros and Burkina Faso is a very good chance for the Cranes to prove a point and qualify. “It’s not that our opponents are weak, but we have a youthful team that can do the job,” he added.

The 21-year old midfielder who created the two goals when the Cranes beat Botswana 2-0 in their opening match of the campaign said they will also have to handle the away games very seriously with lots of planning. “It is high time the government and the Football Federation do much more than they have done to ensure we qualify because it’s every player’s dream in Africa to qualify for this event first,” said Luwagga.

Uganda last appeared at the Afcon finals in 1978 when it was held in Ghana. Speaking about his move from second Division side Sporting Covilha to Rio Ave, Luwagga said it is a dream come true because it has always been his ambition to play in the Top Tier and be among the best.

However the midfielder admitted that it will be a big challenge for him to try and break through to make the first team at the new club. “I am ready for all the challenges because professional football presents all these situations but I have to keep working hard,” he added.

Defender Alex Kakuba and Patrick Edema are the other Ugandan players featuring in Portugal with second Division teams.
