It's never possible to look past the final score when a game matters as much as the clasico nacional between Chivas Guadalajara and Club America did.
The 2-1 result in favour of Chivas was shocking, however, partly because of the discrepancy between the two squads. Guadalajara is fighting relegation, while the Aguilas squad is near the top of the Liga MX table.
That situation hasn't changed with this one game, but Club America's title credentials have to be in question after this result. Big games mean more than just points. That said, Chivas and veteran striker Omar Bravo made the most of their opportunities in the game, while America failed to do so with the chances they had.
Sure, Aguilas fans can point to the fact that striker Dario Benedetto was suspended for this match, but so was one of the best players on the Chivas side, Marco Fabian.
The bottom line is there isn't any excuse for a team to put 23 shots on goal and not score a single time from the run of play. The one goal Club America was able to score came from a penalty at the close of the first half.
It was that Carlos Salcido penalty that set up the greatest wasted opportunity for Club America, as the defender's red card allowed the Aguilas players more than 45 minutes with a man advantage. Yet they failed to find an equalizer, let alone a winner.
Andres Andrade, who has been a useful spark for Club America in recent games, was perhaps betrayed by his youthful exuberance. After being denied on a few early chances, he was quiet for much of game. An effective player shouldn't be so easily discouraged.
Darwin Quintero, however, might be setting new standards of futility in his Club America tenure, as he missed time and again in different and varied ways. From midrange, via header or with close shots, he couldn't put the ball into the net to save his team or his reputation as a potent striker.
In all, there was plenty of blame to go around as the Aguilas players struggled individually and as a whole to show the form that had gotten them to the top three in Liga MX this month.
The person whose reputation might have been damaged the most by this loss was coach Ignacio Ambriz. The defensive mistakes that allowed Bravo to score revealed that the improved backline under Ambriz is actually still shaky when the pressure of a big game is on.
With reports from across the border indicating Major League Soccer is chasing former coach Miguel Herrera, Club America will be well aware that Herrera will likely not be available as a backup to Ambriz for much longer.
Of course, it doesn't make much sense to fire a coach after one key clasicoloss, but Club America's decisions (such as replacing a championship-winning coach in 2014) haven't always depended on reason.
Only time will tell how severe the fallout from this defeat to Chivas will be. Until then, it's clear Club America isn't yet the finished product under Ambriz that it appeared to be only a short while ago.
Con uno menos, Chivas se llevó el clásico nacional
Con un doblete de Omar Bravo, el Rebaño se impuso por 2-1 al América, en el Estadio Azteca.
Chivas supo hacer un partido inteligente y contra todo pronóstico, se metió a la cancha del Estadio Azteca y se impuso por 2-1 al América, pese a jugador todo el segundo tiempo con un hombre menos.
Desde que se escuchó el silbatazo incial, ambos equipos sabían lo que se jugaba y se brindaron al máximo en la cancha. Por un lado, América fue quien tomó la iniciativa, mientras que Chivas se dedicó a esperar y a apostar por la contra con la velocidad del Avión Ramírez e Isaac Brizuela.
A pesar que las Águilas tenían mayor posesión de pelota, fue el Rebaño el equipo que abrió el marcador gracias a un grave error de Osvaldo Martínez, quien intentó regresar el balón a Moisés, pero en el camino se atrevesó Omar Bravo y definió para el 1-0, al 15'.
El partido continuó siendo intenso y con fuertes faltas, sobre todo del América, que jugó muy revolucionado y al filo del reglamento, lo que comenzó a trabar el encuentro, por lo que las jugadas de peligro fueron escasas por algunos momentos.
Chivas comenzó a sentirse más cómodo en la cancha y tomó el control de las acciones, con un Chatón Enríquez robando todos los balones y dandole equilibrio al juego de los tapatíos.
Por su parte, América nunca encontró entendimiento entre Darwin Quintero y Oribe Peralta, quien se toparon con un muro defensivo infranqueable durante casi todo el partido.
Cuando las Águilas comenzaban a crecer, llegó el segundo tanto del Rebaño, gracias a un soberbio centro del Dedos López desde sector derecho, que remató de cabeza Omar Bravo para poner el 2-0 y causar la euforia de la afición rojiblanca, que colmó cerca de la mitad del Estadio Azteca.
Parecía que Chivas se enfilaba a un triunfo sencillo, pero cuando estaba por terminar el primer tiempo,Carlos Salcido cometió un penal de manera absurda y se fue expulsado. Osvaldo Martínez ejecutó de manera correcta el cobro y acercó a su equipo en el marcador.
Para el complemento, ambos técnicos hicieron cambios, en gran medida por la expulsión de Salcido. Ambriz apostó por la velocidad de Arroyo y Almeyda por ajustar el medio campo con la entrada de Israel Castro.
El partido prácticamente se jugó en el lado de Chivas, pues América intentó sacar provecho del hombre de más, abriendo la cancha y desgastando al rival, pero el Rebaño se paró bien en sector defensivo y no permitió más goles, por lo que el marcador final se quedó 2-1 en favor de los tapatíos.
