Kuantan: A Dickson Nwakaeme hat-trick set Pahang FA on the way to a 7-4 thumping of Yadarnabon FC in their Group G game to put themselves in pole position to qualify for the next round of the AFC Cup.
Devandran Saarvindran scored a brace, while Matias Conti and Hafiz Kamal netted the remaining goals for the Malaysian side.
Hlaing Bo Bo also netted two goals for the visitors, in between converted efforts from Djedje Maximin Djawa and Win Niang Soe.
The result sees Pahang needing only a point in their final group match away to Global FC to secure their place in the tournament round of 16.

The hosts came out firing all cylinders from the start and were rewarded for their early pressure after just seven minutes. Nwakaeme found time and space to turn his marker and fire home inside the box to put them ahead.
Conti made it two 11 minutes later when he fired home a squared assist from Nwakaeme after the latter dragged the Yadarnabon defence out of position in the build-up.
The Nigerian capitalised on hesitancy in the visitors’ defence to power home the third goal for the hosts, but Djawa pulled one back just before half-time through a well-worked finish inside the box to put the score 3-1 at the break.
Replacing Conti at the break, Saarvindran made an immediate impact when he restored Pahang’s three-goal cushion with a low finish a minute after coming on.
Hlaing reduced the deficit with a powerful shot on the edge of the box in the 59th minute, but the visitors were pegged back two minutes later when Thiha Si Thu misjudged the flight of Nawkaeme’s header to make it 5-2.
Yadarnabon closed the gap again on 68 minutes through a fine effort from Hlaing, but Hafiz Kamal tapped the ball into an open net off an assist from Azidan Sarudin to restore their three-goal advantage.
Nwakaeme laid the ball on the path of Saarvindran to smash home Pahang’s seventh goal of the evening, but Win chipped the ball over an onrushing Khairul Azhan into the net to complete the score 7-4 in favour of the hosts at the final whistle.
