Nanjing: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors coach Choi Kang-hee has targeted an early goal in Tuesday’s AFC Champions League Group E contest with China’s Jiangsu FC as the former winners seek a second consecutive win at Olympic Sports Centre.
Goals in each half from Go Moo-yul and Lee Dong-gook secured 2006 winners Jeonbuk a 2-1 opening day win over Japan’s FC Tokyo (pictured) last week at home.
And with Jeonbuk not set to begin the defence of their K-League Classic title for just less than two weeks, Choi has a full squad at his disposal for the trip to China.
“For us every game of the six in the group stage is important. Now we have a full squad without injuries and the atmosphere in the team is very good. Our target is to gain three points,” said Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee.
“We are playing away and every away game is difficult. The first goal is decisive to the entire match and I hope we are the team leading the match.
“I've watched two games of Jiangsu this season and they have some pretty good foreign players this year. We will cope with this change and especially in our defence there will be some special arrangement. From what we saw, Jiangsu is still trying to work as a team, but I believe as time goes by, they will be better.
“Though this is an away game, we will focus on ourselves no matter who our opponent is.
For opponents Jiangsu, the Chinese Super League has also not started, although Dan Petrescu’s FA Cup winners followed up last week’s 1-1 draw in Vietnam with Becamex Binh Duong on their AFC Champions League debut with a 2-0 defeat by Guangzhou Evergrande in the season-opening Super Cupon Saturday.
“This will be an extremely important match as it is our first home game of the season and the first ACL home game. Two days ago we just finished a match against CSL Champion Guangzhou Evergrande and now we have to fight the K-League champions,” said Jiangsu coach Petrescu.
“It’s going to be a difficult game as we’re still integrating players into the team. We have many new players; four new foreign players and new Chinese players. We've been coping with a very tight match schedule and had no time for tactical training.
“My biggest wish now is to win a game as soon as possible. Every head coach has to deal with pressure. Now what I can do is to make our team one. Our foreign players are very good, but even if we had Messi here, it would take time for him to settle in.”
