Thu Dau Mot City: Vietnam striker Le Cong Vinh scored the only goal just before the hour mark as Becamex Binh Duong claimed their first-ever win in the AFC Champions League after edging out Group E winners Kashiwa Reysol of Japan on Wednesday.
Cong Vinh netted after 56 minutes at Binh Duong Stadium as 2008 qualifiers Binh Duong ended an 11-match winless run in the AFC Champions League having picked up just two points from their first five games this year, which had already ended their hopes of qualifying for the Round of 16 prior to the visit of Kashiwa.
Kashiwa had already secured their place in this month’s Round of 16, where Tatsuma Yoshida’s side will face Korea Republic’s Suwon Samsung, but saw their unbeaten record ended having beaten Binh Duong 5-1 at home earlier in the campaign.
Vietnam champions Binh Duong started brightly with Ganiyu Oseni and Nguyen Anh Duc going close for the home side, although Kashiwa also had their chances through Yusuke Kobayashi and Hiroki Akino.
Nigerian striker Oseni remained a constant threat for Binh Duong, while at the other end, Kashiwa’s Hiroto Nakagawa was denied by goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong.
The open nature of the game continued as Trinh Quang Vinh failed to find the target for Binh Duong before Yuki Otsu twice went close for Kashiwa in quick succession at the end of the first half.
Both sides continued to enjoy a fair share of possession after half-time, but four minutes before the hour mark, it was Binh Duong who opened the scoring as the ball broke for Cong Vinh on the edge of the Kashiwa penalty area with the visitors unable to clear and the Vietnam striker made no mistake with a composed side-footed finish past goalkeeper Koji Inada.
Kashiwa, though, were unfortunate not to draw level 11 minutes later as Koki Oshima’s rising shot form inside the area beat Binh Duong goalkeeper Tan Truong but came back off the face of the crossbar.
And the goal did not chance the pace of the game with both sides creating chances with Oseni and Ugandan midfielder Moses Oloya threatening for Binh Duong either side of Akino for Kashiwa.
But with neither side able to make further inroads into the scoreline, Binh Duong held on to claim a famous victory having picked up just a single point during their 2008 AFC Champions League campaign.
