Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been crowned the Premier League's Manager of the Season, earlier today. This completes a perfect double, after his Belgian star, Eden Hazard, won the PFA Writers' Player of the Year award.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been crowned the Premier League's Manager of the Season after leading the Blues to the league title this year, where his side have virtually dominated proceedings from start to finish in the 2014-15 campaign.
He involved his backroom staff in the award presentation, and although the award is deserved, questions have been asked as to why he had not won a SINGLE Manager of the Month accolade throughout the season...
Since 2007, there have been four winners of the award up until now, with Sir Alex Ferguson, formerly of Manchester United, taking the plaudits on FIVE occasions (2007, '08, '09, '11 and '13). Harry Redknapp (2010), Alan Pardew (2012) and Tony Pulis (2014) were the other three successful bosses.
When talking to Sky Sports, Jose said: "The way you like to say it in England, the icing on the cake? The icing on the cake, but the cake is more important than the icing; the cake is the Premier League. The cake is the objective of a manager, of the technical staff, of the club, the squad, millions of supporters, and I work for the cake. If at the top of the cake, I am the manager of the season, I am of course very happy.
The problem in football is that you are still eating one cake, and you are thinking already about the next one. This is permanent, so, I enjoy very much this cake, I missed it for a while, the last one I won was in 2005-06, but to come back to England and win it again, is a fantastic feeling."
STAT: Chelsea will break a long-lasting Premier League record when they lift the trophy on Sunday, having led at the top of the pile for a record 274 days this season. Manchester United won the league twelve years ago, leading for 262 days. (source: Opta)
Wenger confirms: Rosicky will remain at the Gunners next season
Encouraging news for Gunners fans, as the 34-year-old Czech midfield maestro appears to be staying at the Emirates next season, despite reports claiming otherwise recently
Arsenal manager Arséne Wenger has confirmed that 34-year-old Czech Republic creative midfielder Tomas Rosicky WILL stay at the Gunners next season, despite reports claiming otherwise in the past few weeks.
It was previously suggested that the former Borussia Dortmundman was disgruntled at his lack of first-team action in a star-studded Arsenal side, packed to the brim with attacking players, but Wenger has maintained the fact that Tomas will play an integral part of the club's campaign in the 2015-16 season, and if needs be, they will trigger a clause in his contract, activating a one-year contract extension.
When asked if he expected the experienced midfielder to stay, Wenger replied: "Yes, we have taken up the option [to keep him]." It was also hinted that Rosicky could be used as part of a swap-plus-cash deal to sign Chelsea's wantaway goalkeeper Petr Cech, which Wenger denied: "Tomas Rosicky is not involved in the transfer market at all, he will be with us next season and we do not use the players for that. Most of the time it is the players who want to join you who come in. Sometimes they might call each other, but we do not get the players to interfere with that."
This will come as encouraging news for Arsenal fans everywhere, as over the past few years, they've grown fond of Rosicky, who knows how to make an impact on a match, whether that be from the substitutes' bench or starting... his tireless energy and attacking positioning, as well as his creative touch are just a few strengths he has over opposition defences, which can be a nightmare to contain as proven time and time again.
A Look Back: Manchester United 3-1 Hull City: James Wilson shines on his debut
Today, Noel Alberto looks back on James Wilson's sparkling debut in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Hull City last season
It was May 6, 2014, a gloomy night for most Manchester United fans at Old Trafford. Champions League football was out of reach, David Moyes had just been sacked not too long ago, and the Old Trafford farewells to United legends Ryan Giggs, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, and Patrice Evra. Despite the all the gloom that was cast upon them that night, it was all smile for Manchester United fans at the end of the night with a 3-1 victory.
Interim player-manager Ryan Giggs put out quite the intriguing team on the night with Alexander Buttner and Antonio Valencia at full backs. Adnan Januzaj was also in the lineup while Tom Lawrenceand James Wilson made their first-team debut. Not much was known about Lawrence or Wilson unless you were quite into watching more of the youth team than the senior team, but we wouldn’t blame you for doing that last season because of how atrocious it was to watch Manchester United at times.
Just after twenty minutes, Phil Jones went off with an injured shoulder and his World Cup dreams were in question after that. Captain Nemanja Vidic came on for what his final Old Trafford performance and displayed some of his best defending of the season on his final day. Tom Lawrence had his opportunities to find the back of the net as he was not trigger-shy, but his shots just flew over and wide. Just passed the half hour mark, James Wilson made his mark. Off of a free kick, Marouane Fellaini headed the ball down right into Wilson’s path and he would go on to make it 1-0.
Just after the hour mark, Wilson would go on to double his tally and the lead by poking home Marouane Fellaini’s rebound. It was looking more and more likely that Wilson was going to get a hat-trick on his debut possibly becoming what could have been the third player in United history to accomplish such a feat. Just two minutes later however, Matty Fryatt halved the lead with a strike of his own dispatching some fear into the United faithful who could sense another disappointment coming along.
Not too long after the Fryatt goal, Giggs took Wilson off for Robin van Persie. Wilson came off to a roaring ovation, and it looked to be sure we’d see more of him in the coming years. Tom Lawrence would also come off a few minutes after Wilson and would come off for the player-manager himself, Ryan Giggs. If Giggs wanted to keep his BPL consecutive goalscoring seasons alive, it would have been quite the ending had he scored at home. Sadly, he did not score, but Robin van Persie put home the dagger just four minutes from time to seal three points for United. Looking back at it, last season had more disappointments than positives, but we will always remember that the bright spots of the season were provided by the youth, the backbone of Manchester United.
