Top-flight pacesetters Al Ahli made hard work of UAE Division 1 Group A outfit Ajman, being taken to extra time before inflicting a 4-0 routing in their President’s Cup opener.
The Arabian Gulf League leaders understandably dominated proceedings, but were made to wait until the 104th minute for UAE winger Ismail Al Hammadi’s breakthrough at Al Shaab’s Khaled bin Mohammed Stadium. Further goals from Dh81million record-buy Moussa Sow, Walid Abbas and Ciel followed for the club who have made the last three finals – losing the preceding pair to Al Ain and Al Nasr.
The 2015 AFC Asian Player of the Year Ahmed Khalil came closest to breaking the deadlock during normal time last night, his cross-goal shot skipped narrowly past the far post on 38 minutes.
The floodgates finally opened past the 90-minute mark. Al Hammadi first tapped in Everton Ribeiro’s chested pass before Senegal forward Sow headed in his 11th goal in 10 appearances.
UAE defender Abbas then tapped in as the Orange Brigade tired, Brazilian forward Ciel tapping into an empty net to complete the scoring.
Meanwhile, Emirates Club’s revival continued after they claimed a 5-3 extra-time triumph against Fujairah to make the quarter-finals.
The Falcons’ Brazilian pair of Rodrigo Pimpao and Renan Garcia struck in regulation time to level Lebanon forward Hassan Maatouk’s double. With Fujairah forced to play forward Ibrahim Khameis in goal having used all three substitutions, additional goals from Mohammad Malalla, Alhusain Saleh and Alassane Diallo followed prior to striker Patrick Eze’s late consolation.
Bottom-placed Al Shaab forgot their top-flight woes as they stormed to a 4-1 extra-time win against Dibba Al Fujairah, Brazilian Ze Eduardo striking a brace.
