The case of Michy Batshuayi is becoming a rather complicated one for Marseille, as the striker has seemingly gone off the boil in recent weeks.
Still by far the team’s top goalscorer, the player has struggled to find the back of the net in recent games, including missing some glaring opportunities in important matches his side can’t really afford to lose.
With little time left before the end of the season, and with the Euros looming this summer, you would have expected the player to start trying even harder as he looks for a spot in Marc Wilmots’ squad come June.
However, it would appear the constant media scrutiny, as well as the pressure of having to perform every single game is finally getting to him.
Until the very last day of the January transfer window, Batshuayi was Marseille’s only striker, being relied upon every single time to find the back of the net.
Missing the chance to win the game for his side at the weekend against Nice, Batshuayi was criticised by his managerin the post-game press conference, relayed by Le10 Sport.
Michel said: “I don’t know if there’s something wrong going on in Michy’s head, but Marseille should have won that game looking at the number of chances. I can’t be satisfied.
“We had a great opportunity before half time, we had others and in the end we concede a goal. Now we’ve drawn yet another game when we need to win every time!”
Strongly linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer, it could be that all of the speculation is playing with the striker’s head, especially since it appears clear that his president, Vincent Labrune, is ready to sell him at the first sign of a €30m+ offer.
Teams such as Tottenham and Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for the player, and with the extra Premier League TV money arriving in the summer, expect big offers to land on Marseille’s desk.
French newspaper L'Equipe last week said contacts were advanced between Tottenham and Batshuayi, and whilst Belgium's HLN think that's premature, they were unable to get a denial of serious interest from the club.
A few more goals would certainly help convince Tottenham to move forward with a potential transfer.
