In our Sporting CP v Bayer Leverkusen Betting Preview we look at what could be the best possible bets between the two sides.
Bayer Leverkusen travel to Portugal on Thursday as they look to progress in this season’s Europa League. In their way stands a in-form Sporting Lisbon side who are currently topping their league table, but the Germans are a strong side this year, especially if Hernandez is available. The two clubs haven’t crossed paths in 16 years, where they met twice in the Champions League. Bayer Leverkusen slightly edged these meetings, but with Sporting having the obvious home advantage it is hard to see them getting walked over.
Sporting will be reliant on Islam Slimani to get the goals in this game. The Algerian has found the net 18 times already this year, and with their opponents possibly being without their main main they must capitalise in this leg. They must take a lead to the Bay Arena to give themselves a chance of qualifying, as Leverkusen have been impeccable at home this season and will be looking to win comfortably in the second leg. Sporting are top of their league table, beating the likes of Benfica and Porto, but on Thursday they face a very strong Leverkusen side, and we don’t fancy them to get anything from it.
Javier Hernandez has bagged 13 times for the away side already this season, which outlines how much of a big miss he’ll be if he isn’t fit. He picked up a knock in their German cup tie with Werder Bremen, but is expected to return to fitness the day before the game. This isn’t a certainty, but if he does play then they’ll possess a totally different threat, making him a great selection for your anytime goal-scorers. They’ll also need to be solid at the back to contain an in-form Sporting side. We believe they’ll stick Jonathan Tah on the prolific Slimani as the German powerhouse has been magnificent this season, resulting on many fans calling for him to be taken to Euro 2016.
