Transfer spending by Premier League clubs this season has surpassed the £1billion mark for the first time, according to Deloitte.
It may have been a quiet start to deadline day on Monday, but total spending in the whole of the 2015-16 campaign has already reached an eye-watering amount.
Deloitte estimates that £130million has been spent so far in the January transfer window, which takes the total sum for the season beyond £1billion for the first time in history.
Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "We've seen Premier League clubs again use the January window to invest significantly in playing talent. With a day left, the total gross spending this season has already reached £1bn for the first time."
Chelsea but swap deal stopped in its tracks, but big names still on the move on deadline day
Chelsea have reportedly rejected the chance to swap strikerDiego Costa for Atletico Madrid's Jackson Martinez.
Costa was a sensation at Atletico before joining Chelsea 18 months ago, and was a critical component of the Blues side that won the league last season.
But his poor form has mirrored that of Chelsea for most of the current campaign leading to suggestions that he could leave - and his former club Atletico stepped in with a suggestion that they could bring him back in exchange for ex-Porto front man Jackson Martinez.
Martinez only joined Diego Simeone's side last summer, but has disappointed since his switch. He's picked up just three goals and the same number of assists, and has spent as much time on the bench as on the pitch.
Those numbers suggest that Atletico's proposal was inordinately cheeky: Costa was poor until Christmas, but has banged in six goals since then to bring his tally to ten in the current campaign. He is also two years younger; though of course he may not look it.
With that deal shelved, Chelsea's only likely bit of business on transfer deadline day seems likely to be for players who are leaving the club.
Alexandre Pato's arrival last week is believed to pave the way for Radamel Falcao to leave, the Colombian's loan seemingly set to be cut short and the player shipped out to China.
The Blues had reportedly failed to get the Falcao loan deal rescinded - hardly surprising considering that he has not played since October - but Jiangsu, the Super League side who signed Ramires for £25 million this month, are reported to be interested in taking over the loan agreement, having apparently themselves been in the running for Pato.
The other player who looks set to leave Stamford Bridge is another striker,Loic Remy, with either Leicester City or Newcastle expected to grab him. Leicester were favourites, but Sky Sports reported on Monday that Claudio Ranieri apparently prefers the idea of CSKA Moscow's Ahmed Musa - also a target for Manchester United - or Crystal Palace's Dwight Gayle.
The Independent claims that this latest twist has made the Magpies favourites, and fans will no doubt love the idea of bringing back a striker who was superb for them in the 2013-14 season.
Yet with Steve McClaren's men having all-but-finalised a move for Roma'sSeydou Doumbia, will they want Remy as well? Considering Doumbia's patchy career history and fitness, and Newcastle's struggle for goals, it might not be a bad idea to grab both players.
