Mauro Icardi’s penalty miss capped off a miserable night for the Nerazzurri, as goals from Alex, Carlos Bacca and M’Baye Niang secured the Rossoneri a famous derby victory
While not as pronounced as Mark Hateley’s header in 1984, Alex’s best impression of the Englishman opened the floodgates as AC Milan sealed a 3-0 victory over Inter in the 184th Derby della Madonnina.
Rossoneri fans’s pre-match choreography depicting the striker’s towering strike over Fulvio Collovati served as a good omen, as the Brazilian netted in similar fashion while Bacca and Niang added to the tally in the second half to hand the Diavolo their first win in the cross-town rivalry since May 2014.
The scoreline could have been much different had Mauro Icardi fired home from the penalty spot in the 70th minute with the scoreline still 1-0, but the Argentine’s miss captured how tough things have been for the Nerazzurri lately as they’re now winless in their last four Serie A matches.
Eder couldn’t get a clean header off from Juan Jesus’ cross while Marcelo Brozovic’s effort from distance was stopped by Gianluigi Donnarumma, who became the youngster goalkeeper to start in the derby for the Rossoneri.
Inter had another chance through Stevan Jovetic but he passed his effort straight at the Milan shot-stopper, opening the door for the Rossoneri to take the lead in the 35th minute.
Like Hateley did over 30 years ago, Alex towered over Davide Santon to head the Rossoneri into the lead.
Donnarumma nearly threw away the lead as he rushed off his line to clear a loose ball, but Jovetic wasn’t able to get a head on the resulting cross into the box.
The youngster was clearly not at his best as he incredibly flubbed at a clearance attempt, sending the ball into the air. Eder got onto it but Donnarumma first touched the ball before colliding with the Inter man.
Referee Antonio Damato pointed to the spot before changing his mind, a decision that drew the ire of Roberto Mancini who was sent off for dissent.
The Nerazzurri had a golden opportunity to level the match with 20 minutes remaining after Alex’s foul on Icardi, but the Argentine stepped up and fired his strike off the post.
It proved costly as less than three minutes later Bacca beat Miranda to the ball and slotted past Samir Handanovic, while Niang added a third soon after as the Slovenian parried a save back into the path of the Frenchman before firing home.
Mario Balotelli nearly got in on the action but Handanovic prevented the former Inter man from netting, as the full-time whistle was blown soon after, much to the jubilation of the home supporters.
Milan’s next match sees them travel to take on Palermo, while Inter play host to Chievo.
